Undertow
Reviews

** spoiler alert ** 3.5 stars This is the story of the invasion of ugly-human-fish-sea creature hybrid mermaids that call themselves the Alpha. Self-pretentious? Maybe a little I actually want to read the next one, but seriously, did you have to kill off Shadow! Not necessary or cool!

Book #96 Read in 2015 Undertow by Michael Buckley This is the first book in a young adult science fiction/fantasy series. Lyric is half human, half Alpha (a water people civilization). The Alpha have returned to Coney Island and the New Yorkers feel threatened. Militant groups do not want the creatures to attend the same school as their children. But there are even bigger problems, as another water tribe are coming to slaughter the Alpha, and then the humans. Will Lyric be able to save everyone she loves? This book had an interesting premise, complex characters, good action, humor and romance. The ending made me want to read #2 right now. High school boys and girls would like this series. I borrowed this book from the public library. http://melissasbookpicks.blogspot.com

I listened to this as an audio book on my way too and from work. I couldn't really get into the world it all seemed a little ridiculous and unbelievable and I didn't quite get what the author was going for. The writing was either super simple or had over the top smilies that seemed a little ridiculous and pulled a little bit away from the writing. It wasn't bad enough that I stopped listening to it but I probably won't pick it up again.

Stars: 4.5/5

Really good! I loved the world building and the novel. SO fast paced.... TALKED ABOUT A CLIFHANGER! NEED THE NEXT ONE!

Blog | Twitter | Instagram | As a note, a printed galley of this novel was sent to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not effect my opinions in any way. Undertow promises to be the next thrill ride in young adult dystopia and is being totted as a mix of The Outsiders and District 9. What could go wrong? Pair that with its gorgeous cover art and captivating description, it’s a novel we just know–we feel it in our bones–will be intriguing and full of fantasy. I have to warn you now, readers, that is very unique and addictive and you may find yourself unable to put it down. It’s action packed, romantic and we find a startling world before us as well as a wonderful heroine in teenager Lyric Walker. I’m serious, guys–you’re going to LOVE Lyric! Much like other stories in the genre, there’s a massive point in connections; a dangerous love story. Somehow, it isn’t overwhelming or dull or even all that repetitive. It borders on frustrating and cliche, but really only dances around the edge of that and is quite a lot more bearable than other stories of insta-love. Michael Buckley creates a vivid display for us to submerge in and proves to us that storytelling isn’t lost in this much hyped about genre. Enemies, danger, survival–it’s all such a common plot, but the way Buckley goes about it is remarkably fascinating and colorful. Continued @ BOOKEDJ.
