Excerpt from The Wool Situation: July 1951; Tws-16 Production in Australia, the world's largest producer, is expected to be slightly lower, perhaps 15 to 20 million pounds or 1 to 2 percent, than the 1950-51 output. On a clean basis the percentage reduction from 1950 probably will be a little larger because of the unusually low shrinkage last season. The estimated reduction reflects a decline both in sheep numbers and the average yield per animal due to sheep drownings, pests, disease, decreased lambing, and emergency shearing. Practically the entire clip is apparel wool of which about 70 percent is merino. Production in the Union of South Africa is expected to increase about 10 million pounds. However, production would still be only about three-fourths of the record output of 319 million pounds in 1932.
