Unruly Places Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies
Reviews

All of the expected places are in this list, but also a few new to me.

A fascinating look at odd places (and non-places) on this world. I appreciate the further exploration of places I was aware of, like super-ship The World, Cappadocia, and Sandy Island. But most places I had never heard of. A few of my favorite were the Aralqum Desert, which was a sea not too long ago (and livens my shallow understanding of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan); Bir Tawil, an area between Egypt and Sudan that neither wants; Agdam, noted for its utter destruction; Gutterspace, someone's idea of fun, a collection of tiny landscapes squeezed between "normal" owned land; Bountiful, an attempt at Utopia in Russia (and reminiscent of similar American Utopias as depicted in the totally awesome Slant of Light); and Barle-Nassau and Barle-Hertog, where Belgium and Holland merge in a patchwork space, which makes the great Hugo winner The City and the City a little less crazy. I dock the book one star for going a little too academic in spots. But on most pages, the book will ignite your imagination.
