It's a decent book. I think there is some good writing in here. It's just the plot seems like others I've read before or at least an HBO miniseries to the point I'm shocked it hasn't been developed yet. There was just a tad too much going on, but I'd like to see what else Ritter would write.

           I don't get the good reviews. Krysten Ritter wrote a predictable thriller with bad metaphors, high school/small town stereotypes, and a female protagonist channeling Erin Brokovich who falls for the boys she once liked in high school and who everyone ends up thinking is "crazy." News flash: the boys who never left small town Indiana and are work for the company you're trying to take down and own a liquor store have no business being anywhere near a successful attorney from Chicago. The entire thing felt like one big cliche to me, and the writing felt forced as if the author was trying too hard. I wasn't on the edge of my seat and had absolutely no connection to any of the characters. I felt like I was forcing myself to read a book I wasn't into, because I respect the actress who wrote it. Also, Book of the Month has either really bombed at thriller selections, or I'm just not the audience for thrillers.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 because I love Krysten!

I had a lot of fun reading this book. It kept me coming back for more so I ended up reading most of it at work! It was pretty fascinating, and I thought the main character was well-fleshed out with definite flaws and personality quirks. Parts of the character even reminded me of Jessica Jones, which makes me wonder how much the character was based on JJ/Krysten herself.

However, I found some of the connections the main character made were either too convenient or not explained well enough for the reader. She seemed to figure things out when it was needed to move the plot forward, rather than as a natural consequence to things happening in the book. I also thought the plot itself was a bit weird...it started out like a John Grisham novel meets cozy small-town mystery, then it randomly got mashed with Pretty Little Liars. It wasn't bad, per se, just not what I was expecting.

Overall, I think it was an impressive debut for someone who makes a living acting, not writing. I'm probably overscoring the book because of that, but I really did genuinely enjoy the ride!
