'Uses for boys' is raw, daring, hard hitting and courageous. Anna has no role model. Her mother leaves her home alone most nights while she goes through a revolving door of men. Anna is desperate for love - from her mother, from anyone, so when boys start paying attention to her she takes it. She lets them do what they want to do. But soon she is getting a reputation for it. My heart was practically breaking for Anna as I was reading it. But it also breaks for her mother and for every woman who has wanted to be loved and cherished, not just desired. Scheidt's lyrical style of writing and the short chapters are a saving grace and help the reader traverse what is really uncomfortable terrain. Bravo. I'm waiting for her next book xx

Wow, this book lingered with me for a bit. I gobbled it quickly on Sunday morning and later while chopping vegetables, I found myself thinking this over with a tear in my eye. Real, unflinching and poetic. 4.5 stars.

From the moment I opened this book, I was drawn and hooked into the story. Honest. The very first passage of the novel, the conversation our narrator had with her mother at a young age was just so...

You know.

It’s one of my favorite novels that represents a sort of coming of age as well as the exploration of sexuality. There’s something very meaningful in the way that Erica writes the story. In its flow, there is something just so appealing to the story and offers just the right amount of details.

I read Uses For Boys ages ago when I saw the summary for it and saw the little shout out that Ellen Hopkins gave it. I will never, ever regret picking it up and giving it a go. Although there were many aspects of the story I didn’t relate to, and there were many moments you feel uncomfortable for the narrator (see: trigger warnings), it still managed to touch my heart and make me feel as though I know Anna and her mind.

Which is, if you ask me, an open door to something great. So do open that door, readers. You won't regret it.
