It’s a pleasure to read Chatwin’s trim, tight, yet colorful writing in this short book, set in Czechoslovakia, from post-war through the Prague Spring and the Soviet invasion to “normalization” and the Cold War. It’s rich on the origins and value of porcelain, Jewish golems, and the ties that bind one to a place, a person, and a collection. I recommend it.
