Below-cost Timber Sales on the National Forests

"Analysis of receipts and costs for national forest timber sales for fiscal years 1978, 1982, and 1983, reveal that five out of the nine Forest Service regions consistently incur net losses on their timber sales. Total losses in these five regions amounted to approximately $443 million for the three years studied. Taxpayer losses from the sale of public timber at prices below cost were greatest in the Rocky Mountain regions and Alaska."--Page 1.
