Thanks to Lilyyy for the prompts, who I believe got it from Jamie. Feel free to borrow it from me, but be sure to give them credit! This was a lot of fun to work on :) **2021 READING STATS** Number Of Books You Read: 58 Number of Re-Reads: 2 Genre You Read The Most From: YA Fantasy 1. Best Book You Read In 2021? Either Uprooted by Naomi Novik or The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. You're lucky I narrowed it down to two. 2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? The Relic of Perilous Falls by Raymond Arroyo. *cries* 3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Hekkin Switch by A.S. King. Holy moly. And Voices by David Elliott, although it probably shouldn't have been. 4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)? Despite how much I blather about the books I read, I don't think any of my friends have read any of my recs yet? 5. Best series you started in 2021? Best Sequel of 2021? Best Series Ender of 2021? Best starter goes to The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin; best sequel To Darkness Fled by Jill Williamson (this is an easy win because the other sequels I read were exceedingly meh); and best ender is definitely Warriors of Wing and Flame by Sara B. Larson. 6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2021? I read everything Sara B. Larson has ever written this year after the "Sisters of Shadow and Light" duology exploded me into smithereens. That counts for something. 7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? Sci-fi isn't necessarily out of my comfort zone, but it's definitely a genre I want to love more than I have. In that regard Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir blew my pessimistic expectations out of the water. 8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? The Rule of Mirrors by Caragh M. O'Brien. I may have been stress reading just a little, but also the weird, stressful twist this took hooked me completely. 9. Book You Read In 2021 That You Would Be MOST Likely To Re-Read Next Year? The Ones We're Meant to Find by Joan He for blog purposes. It requires more thought than I was able to give it the first time around. 10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2021? I can't stop thinking about the cover to Uprooted. I was literally thinking about it last week. 11. Most memorable character of 2021? ROCKY ALL THE WAY (Project Hail Mary) 12. Most beautifully written book read in 2021? The Fifth Season. I read so much of it aloud to myself. Beautiful prose. Scratched the same part of my brain as Rushdie. 13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2021? I Believe in Love: A Personal Retreat Based on the Teaching of St. Therese of Lisieux by Jean du Coeur de Jésus d'Elbée. Also, Switch. I'm reeling. 14. Book you can’t believe you waited until 2021 to finally read? Murder on the Orient Express. What is wrong with me?? 15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2021? Anything from I Believe in Love: A Personal Retreat Based on the Teaching of St. Therese of Lisieux will do. I have a list at home and I'll fill this space in. 16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2021? Shortest: The Most Beautiful Thing by Kao Kalia Yang (32 pages). Longest: To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini (878). 17. Book That Shocked You The Most (Because of a plot twist, character death, left you hanging with your mouth wide open, etc.) Project Hail Mary, hands down. (view spoiler)[When Rocky's ship appeared my jaw dropped, which was concerning to my family because that hasn't ever happened to me. I didn't read the inside flap, so I didn't know he was going to meet an alien that WAVES BACK *dies* (hide spoiler)] 18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!) HADES AND PERSEPHONE FROM LORE OLYMPUS: VOLUME 1. 19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year Taako, Merle, and Magnus from Here There Be Gerblins (start here to join me in screaming about TAZ). 20. Favorite Book You Read in 2021 From An Author You’ve Read Previously The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis <3 21. Best Book You Read In 2021 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure/Bookstagram, Etc.: Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen. A delightful rec from a good friend. 22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2021? Either Finn from These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan, or Loukas from Warriors of Wing and Flame. 23. Best 2021 debut you read? Project Hail Mary and Switch are going to fight it out. 24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year? Realm Breaker by Victoria Aveyard. I feel like I visited all the places she took us. 25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read? Pugs of the Frozen North by Philip Reeve. I bet it made you smile just now too, didn't it? Also Project Hail Mary, don't @ me. 26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2021? Honestly, The Most Beautiful Thing by Kao Kalia Yang. And of course To Darkness Fled because I'm a romantic fool. 27. Hidden Gem Of The Year? The Bright & the Pale by Jessica Rubinkowski. I actually really enjoyed this one. 28. Book That Crushed Your Soul? Pugs of the Frozen North. I kid. Willow by Julia Hoban was pretty soul crushing. I don't have any serious answers to this question I guess, sorry. 29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2021? Good Dream, Bad Dream/Sueno Bueno, Sueno Malo: The World's Heroes Save the Night!/Los Heroes del Mundo Salvan La Noche! by Juan Calle. This was such a fun concept, I've considered re-reading it, or purchasing it so I can look at it forever. 30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)? From Darkness Won by Jill Williamson. *shakes fist* So much unneccessary back-and-forth-ing! Augh! Or Switch, only in this case I mean mad as in crazy. I went a little insane. Bonus Questions? Favorite post you wrote in 2021? My review of These Hollow Vows. I had a lot of fun with this one. It gives you a solid dose of my sense of humor so the fact that it's out in the world is terrifying if I think about it too long. Note: The third and fifth spoilers aren't actually spoilers, I just like using the spoiler tags for comedic effect. This obviously backfires on itself because only maniacs or people who've read the book click on the spoiler tags, and all two of my subscribers miss out on my jokes. Les sigh. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2021? Started recording a podcast with my brother! Should be active some day, so it's early stages excitement. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year? I have a real human job. This prevents me from staying home and reading and writing reviews and blog posts all day every day. This became particularly difficult to deal with when the sun started going to bed before I did and the insidious SAD set in. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love? Read my review of Voices by David Elliott. It's completely serious, but marked the first foray into the kind of writing I'm hoping to have on my blog. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? The Goodreads one, for the first time since I've been on here! Looking Ahead Questions 1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2021 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2022? Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell. The part of my heart that wants to DEVOUR EVERYTHING THE WOMAN HAS EVER WRITTEN was run over by my tbr :( no regerts 2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2022 (non-debut)? The Shadow and Bone trilogy. I want desperately to watch the show, I've had many friends tell me how great it was! 3. 2022 Debut You Are Most Anticipating? Book of Night by Holly Black. 4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2022? These Twisted Bonds by Lexi Ryan. I must know how it endssss. 5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2022? Blog posts galore! Also here's hoping I can reach that Goodreads goal again! Someday I want to be one of those people that read 100 books in a year :O I'm not sure how realistic it is since I want to dissect the heck out of each book I read afterwards on my blog, which is a thing that actually exists now, kind of! It's boring, but it won't be for long. 2022 is looking up!

2021 was an interesting reading year for me. I was at my lowest point in my life after four years of being at my happiest. I was struggling with losing my dream career because of the pandemic, I was recovering from a major bipolar and schizophrenic episode that left me hospitalized and a shell of my former self, and I was shaken by my mother informing me that my dad had lung cancer and didn’t have much time left. I was emotionally compromised and completely vulnerable in 2021, and after I committed to myself that I would spend one year isolating myself in order to recover mentally and emotionally, I fell completely back in love with reading. As I was still mentally hazy from my time in the psych ward, I began reading graphic novels and comic books after my psychiatrist recommend me to start off slow. I branched out and tried to read some contemporaries (and one romance), and quickly realized my preferences before switching to reading young adult fantasy. I caught up on book series from my youth and began writing Goodreads reviews, which ironically got me back into contact with a friend from elementary school and high school who also shared a passion for reading. She would later pass away in late 2021, but the year we corresponded through book reviews and direct messages will always stay with me, and I’ll never forget how her little comments on my reviews and her book recommendations helped me through one of the hardest points in my life. (Rest in peace, Gillian.) I read my first nonfiction book in 2021, which was interesting as I always considered nonfiction as a genre that was strictly not my taste. I read a few series as I felt like it gave a sense of continuity and comfort to my time in isolation. I read the Shadowhunters series, the Millennium series, and a few trilogies as well. Some of my favourite stand-alone books were from this reading year as well. The Fall of Princes, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and Confessions are among these. My favourite book from this reading year, and my only five star read of this year, was On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, which resonated with me in ways I couldn’t have possibly imagined. I also began to read the Harry Potter series this year, and while it didn’t connect with me the way that it did so many others, I had fun reading them and I was glad to begin to cross off those books from my reading list. Overall, this was a tough time in my life but a great reading year, and this year easily reminded me of my love for reading, and I was so happy to reach 75 read books in one year, because each of them felt like a comfort that got me through one of the worst times in my life.

Goal: 100 books. Final count: 119 books. Avg: 2.82 LMAO. Overall: I guess it was a good year, except towards the end because I was (am) on a huge reading slump and the uni had my mental and emotional health hanging by a thread. I enjoyed a lot of my books and hope the next year they'll be better!
