It was a really nice change to read this book from what I normally pick up. I hadn’t picked up a dystopian novel in at least three years and was eager to read this because I enjoyed Roth’s Divergent series when I was a teenager. 

One thing I didn’t realize when I started this book - going in mostly blind - was that it is about the aftermath of a previous dystopian government and you learn about that world through the main character’s memories. The world that government had set up was really interesting and I would have liked to have read a book set in that time instead of after it’s overthrow. 

I found the writing style to take me a few chapters to get used to and then I just kept waiting… waiting for some excitement, waiting for some suspense, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Although there were a few wtf reveals, I didn’t find them all that unexpected.

The very mild romance woven through the main character’s history and journey was such a breath of fresh air. It was exactly the break I needed.

Although I wanted more from this story, I don’t regret reading it and I did enjoy most aspects of it and plan to read Roth’s other adult dystopian book

A new dystopian mystery from the author of Divergent, following Sonya Kantor, the propaganda poster girl, for the abolished dictatorship regime.

Reading a dystopia book after the uprising has already occurred was really fascinating to me. It had all those elements I've come to love from a dystopian setting, with an intricate world system that I found fascinating. However, the plot kind of fell flat. It was there, but I constantly found myself searching for more.

Sonya's character felt so robotic. I mean, obviously, she's finding it hard to shake the old ways and manners she'd been brought up with, understandable after 17 years of it being programmed into her. But even when she saw what that old life had hidden from her, she still just lacked a fight, lacked the fire that I've grown to expect from Roth's female leads.

When the big mystery was finally revealed, I was a little in shock, I have to admit. But then it was kind of hinted throughout, maybe? I would have to read it to be sure.

It's not my favourite read by Veronica Roth, I just feel more could have been done with this world she's created, as it was very intricately put together, but lacked the execution.
