Vincent Tirado

Demons clash with inheritance claims as secrets unfold and violence is unleashed over twelve harrowing hours trapped in a house with the worst thing imaginable: family.

You Should Have Been Nicer To My Mother

I really wanted to like this more because I enjoy gothic horror and whodunnit. The combination of that with a cast of non-white characters is always intriguing to me, but this missed the mark.

The affect of the writing and the audiobook narrator was flat. I was being told things but not shown many. The ending was rushed and not even surprising because I figured out the big twist at the beginning. I didn’t, however, confirm my theory and was interest enough in finding out if I’m right to complete the book. My last gripe is that none of the family members were truly distinct enough for me to recall them by name, but the book relied a lot on us remembering who they are from their initial introduction.

I did enjoy the atmosphere, plot, and cultural nuance. I think the author did a great job in including Dominican culture without it feeling like an after school special. There is a way for people to write diversely without it coming across as performative.
