I absolutely loved this book. Before reading Team of Rivals, I knew very little about the former competitor turned right hand man apart from the classic "Seward's Folly."
Once I knew a little about him I wanted to know more. This book answered all those questions. 
It would have been easy for the author to concentrate on the war years. There's simply so much there. He would have done a disservice to Seward. Thankfully the author masterfully balances the narrative along the entirety of Seward's life. In fact, I found myself fascinated by the events of Seward's life that took place after his traumatic carriage accident, assassination attempt, and the loss of the president, his wife and daughter all within a short period of time. The fact that he continued to serve Johnson amazes me as well as learning about all be accomplished during that time. 
I highly recommend this book and am adding it to my amazon wish list.
