Walter Tevis

Fast Eddie Felson has a reputation as a pool hustler to be feared, but his ambitions go far beyond taking small-town punks for a few bucks here and there. He has the talent to make big money, but he soon learns that it takes more than natural ability to become a real winner. He heads to Chicago to test himself against the legendary Minnesota Fats in more than forty-hours of high-stakes pool.

The Hustler

While easy to read, this book fails to achieve greatness. The protagonist Eddie is not the most sympathetic character, making it hard to fully invest in the story. There are glimmers of good character development, but unfortunately the narrative falters by the conclusion. As light summer reading material, this book could suffice. Yet with an unlikable main character and dissatisfying ending, it likely won’t prove memorable enough to warrant a permanent spot on one’s shelf. This review attempts to balance both the book's strengths as breezy fiction and its shortcomings in terms of depth and character. Ultimately it didn't move or resonate enough to earn a wholehearted recommendation.

Nach "The Queen's Gambit" der zweite Volltreffer von Walter Tevis. 

Vielen sicher aus der Verfilmung mit Paul Newman (deutsch "Haie der Großstadt") bekannt, geht es hier geht um den Poolbillard-Spieler und -Gambler Eddie Felson, der als überhebliches und unerfahrenes Talent in die Pool-Hochburg Chicago kommt und dort erstmal ordentlich auf die Fresse fliegt.

Wie in "Queen's Gambit" vermag es der Autor auch hier, mich als Leser komplett in die Welt eines Nischensports eintauchen zu lassen, von dem ich nur wenig Ahnung habe. Der Sport und die damit verbundenen Taktiken und Spielformen sind gleichzeitig Mittelpunkt und Nebensache der Geschichte, die vor allem von den Charakteren lebt: der getriebene Eddie, die wunderbare Sarah, der grandiose Minnesota Fats.

Die knapp 200 Seiten lesen sich da wie im Fluge.
