Classic MacLean, and one of his best. 

I wanted something light to read over the weekend, and the new crop of thriller writers just weren't cutting it. So I went back to the master.

The writing is intelligent without being pretentious, smooth without being juvenile, and with that wry humour that Maclean pulls off so well. 

His heroes are hyper-masculine, strong and stoic.. But deep down, they have a passionately beating heart. 

His women are ultra-feminine and constantly clutching their pearls in concern for the fate of their men.. but when push comes to shove, they're coolly hyper-competent.
 
The villains are evil, but honorable. 

There's double-crossing, triple-crossing, and possibly even quadruple-crossing. I lost track.

No one writes like Maclean these days. And that's just too bad.
