Excerpt from Canada of to-Day This book is the result of a journey of inquiry. It is a serious attempt to state frankly the conditions, tendencies and opinions of Canada as I found them. As far as I am aware, it is without bias of politics or religion or society or officialism. I have been to Canada five times in the last ten years, and claim some personal knowledge of its conditions. Four times I have made long and careful investigations from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Last autumn I entered Canada from the Pacific, after a journey across the United States. My purpose in choosing this point of departure was to have another perspective unaffected by the progressive influence of the more advanced and settled provinces near the Atlantic.
