I've read some peoples reviews on this, and it has been mixed. Some like..some don't. After seeing that My Enchanted Rambling liked it and I commented, and she told me I should see for myself. I've had the book for awhile now, and I haven't read any Faery books that I can remember so I did, and I'm definitely glad. I can honestly say I want to read the second one to learn more about Laurel, and the 3rd when it comes out next year. 




At first it seemed to start off kind of slow, but probably about half way through it started to get interesting. I was wanting to know what happened with the characters more and more. Here's the low-down...Laurel was adopted when she was 3. She was left on the doorstep of her parents house in a basket none the less. How funny is that? A 3 year old in a basket. Anyways, later on in the book you learn who left her there and why..kind of. By age 15 her parents move them to a new city where she's put into a public school. (She's been homeschooled all her young life) There she meets David. Yes, there's a boy in the story, or two. :) During the story Laurel notices something on her back, but what it is she doesn't know. At first she thinks it's just a zit, just a normal teenage thing. She meets Tamani, a very different kind of boy, who let's her in on what she is. What she finds out kind of throws her for a loop. :) There lies our love triangle now. We just love those love triangles. From there on other things start happening. I don't want to really go more into it. let's just say her dad starts getting sick, some creepy realtor guy shows up, and she continues to learn of her heritage. I know I'm kind of wacky with the reviews. I give a little and your stuck wondering more right? Just nod and agree.

Definitely a 4 star on the enjoyment level, on the 'good book' scale it might be closer to a 3 star though. This book is very typical for the paranormal YA books coming out during that the time this was published. It's probably also written for people a little younger on the YA side, but I still really enjoyed listening to it. However, if you're tired of YA thropes like insta-love and love triangles this wont be the book for you.

I really loved the take on Fae in this book! I loved how they are evolved plants and how that is important to the plot! 

Something that I found kind of annoying is the part where David says “I have a knife in my car.” Like, you’re the sweet nerdy kid, and this is clearly only for the plot. 

But other than that, I loved the book!

La seule raison pour laquelle j'ai terminé ce roman : il est relativement court et en gros caractères.

Même si le thème abordé est intéressant - on parle de fées avec des fleurs qui leurs poussent dans le dos - et très original, j'ai eu énormément de mal à m'immerger dans cette lecture. La raison est très simple : le style d'écriture est très pauvre. Je ne sais pas si cela est dû à un manque de maturité de l'auteur ou à une traduction peu formelle mais le résultat est plutôt décevant. Je dirais que cela pourrait certainement plaire à un public assez jeune mais déconcertera fort probablement tout adulte qui s'y aventure.

Les principales choses qui m'ont dérangées sont les suivantes :

- le manque de vocabulaire ! Comme je vous le disait l'écriture est extrêmement simplette et ne comporte aucun synonyme. J'exagère légèrement mais le texte se compose de "Laurel fait ci" Laurel fait ça" Dialogue. "Laurel pense ceci". Etc... Impossible de s'immerger donc.

- le manque d'émotions. Durant certains passages l'autrice nous informe que Laurel se sent perdue dans ses sentiments, elle introduit un triangle amoureux qui n'a pourtant aucune émotion. J'ai eu l'impression que nos personnages étaient des robots dénués de sentiments. Je n'ai absolument pas compris ni même ressentie la moindre étincelle d'amour ou d'amitié.

- les espaces temporels. Voilà encore un point assez perturbant pour moi : j'aurais apprécié des petites phrase de liaison entre les espaces de temps. L'autrice peut terminer un paragraphe sur un dialogue et commercer le suivant par une action ordinaire qui a parfois lieu des jours plus tard, sans liaison. Cela m'a gêné car je n'ai pas ressentie le temps qui passait - notre histoire s'étale sur plusieurs mois - et cela a manqué pour la construction des relations par exemple. 

- enfin le dernier point : le manque d'intrigue. Tout était prévisible à l'avance. EXTRÊMEMENT prévisible. Je ne dis pas que ce n'était pas intéressant, simplement que j'avais tout deviner et que je savais où on allait. J'aurais aimé être surprise...

En conclusion si vous êtes passionnés par les histoires de fées ou que vous êtes un jeune lecteur sans attente particulière, allez-y l'histoire est sympa.
Mais si vous êtes un lecteur aguerri avec des quelques exigences, passez votre chemin.

Enchanting. That is the first word that comes to mind to describe this book! Aprilynne Pike weaves a magical story that makes you question what you truly believe in.

What I really enjoyed about this book was that it was able to incorporate the world of the faeries without seeming too juvenile. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a child's story as much as the next person. However it was refreshing to read a true "faerie tale" from the perspective of a young adult protagonist. Laurel is fun to follow through the story, she has a believable personality, and although she was flitting through a imaginative world you never lost track of her in the real world.

Deep at the heart of the book is a love triangle that shines. It reminded me much of the Twilight Series love triangle, only it was written so much better! Although Laurel is torn, she is an adult enough character that she never seems whiny or obnoxious. That was my biggest issue with Bella in the other series.

The only reason I wasn't able to give this book a full five star rating is because the beginning is rather slow. Not so badly that you want to put the book down, but to deter a reader who picked this book up on a whim. Overall I am wholly impressed by Pike's debut novel! I cannot wait to pick up the next one in the series when it comes out!

I ADORED THIS SERIES WITH A FIERY PASSION. So cute and an original story line. I will follow Pike's books until she can't write anymore.
