The events of this novel take place during the course of a single day in an unnamed city of occupied Germany, where the endless drone of Allied planes overhead increases the already heightened tension. A collage of twenty intriguing men and women, somewhat disoriented characters, repeatedly try to find understanding or love, but their cries for help are drowned out by church bells, sirens, automobile horns - or other people.
