On Sundays, She Picked Flowers

Firstly, I would check the trigger warnings before reading this. It wasn’t too bad content wise for me, but I definitely know some people who would struggle to get into this because of various triggers.

During the Jim Crow era, Jude escapes her abusive mother by retreating to this haunted house in the woods of Georgia where she has nothing else to do but self reflect and hope nothing kill’s her. Years later, an intriguing stranger visits, unlocking even more opportunities for reflection, forcing her to confront moments of her past she’d rather forget.

I really enjoyed the of generational trauma as well as Black cultural norms. This book is the definition of “hurt people hurt people”. I barely read the blurb, so the sapphic element caught me off guard in the best way possible. Extremely pleasant surprise. The prose is also gripping and helps develop the right atmosphere.

I think at times, it was way too rushed. I never felt like I truly got to settle with the story before we’re moving onto the next thing. I would’ve welcomed something longer and more fleshed out, ultimately.

When Judith Rice killed her mother, she thought she put an end to the woman's hold on her. Seventeen years later, secluded deep in the woods of northern Georgia, Jude knows that the past isn't all that easy to discard. Alone with her strange house and even stranger woods, Jude must grapple with ghosts, haints, beasts, and an enigmatic woman who threatens to undo the tentative peace Jude's built for herself by fanning the violence that lives just underneath her skin.(less)
