There was lots to admire in the book - lots of food, nuggets of introspection on how we form relationships and the book ultimately meanders through trying to figure out what happiness is/what the meaning of life truly is in a hyper-competitive and perhaps even meaningless world. 

In terms of the magical realism aspect, mysterious people come into the picture at some point in an attempt to steer the main character towards a better understanding of himself and the overarching mystery that he's trying to solve. One, in particular, did stand out – Emma, whose story about life as a Mormon missionary feels like it could be a lovely short story in and of itself if the prose were tightened.
