This was beautiful writing, but it did not work for me as a short. If I didn’t have a decent understanding of mythology I would have been completely lost the entire time, because the author takes for granted that everyone knows not only the Iliad but even variations on stories. I would love to see this as a full length.

Variations on an Apple is a short story about a fortified city that is under attack and the relationship between a boy named Paris with Illion. Honestly, I don't understand what I just read because non of it made sense to me. Right now I'm just grappling with whatever I picked up from it. There were mentions of greek gods and goddesses and a few historical figures of the world, but I don't understand the significance of it to the story. Proceed with caution because it's a bit weird and hard to process.

what a fascinating wonderful twist on the myth of troy. beautiful prose that felt both mythological and contemporary. now this is a fitting retelling.
