This story chronicles the attempts of a group of jealous kids to scare the class queen, Courtney. While not very suspenseful or teeming with action, this is a quaint fun little read. A non-Goosebumps-inducing story with humor and feeling and monsters that only appear until the last second. One of the less "out-there" titles of the infamous series.

Eddie is absolutely obsessed with the challenge of trying to scare and humiliate Courtney King. She’s just so perfect and brave, and everything she does makes Eddie look terrible. However, no matter what he does, Courtney manages to come out of his schemes looking better and better. When he finds out that she believes in monsters, Eddie decides to enlist his movie-making brother and friends in a plot that would introduce Courtney to mud monsters in the local forest (by using great make-up and special effects, of course). On the night of his plan, real mud monsters rise out of the forest, Courtney is proven right, and Eddie and his friends are once again.

Not only is You Can’t Scare Me not particularly scary, Eddie is a frustrating and annoying protagonist. Many people struggle with the difficulty of trying to feel good about themselves when they are confronted with someone who is very successful, but most don’t engage in dozens of elaborate plans to undermine anyone who innocently inspires insecurity. I appreciated that Eddie’s plots never worked, but it was boring to read a book that almost entirely about a bunch of jealous kids trying to hurt someone else.
