At this point, Karen M. McManus is an auto-buy author for me. I don’t read the blurb. I don’t check reviews. I just hand over my money and prepare for emotional damage. This one had me stressed, suspicious, and fully invested and even though I had issues with the reveal at first, the more I sat with it, the more I appreciated how everything unraveled.

The “skip day gone wrong” premise is elite. Three former best friends. A spontaneous decision. A murder. Drugs. Blackmail. Secrets that have been quietly rotting for years. It’s messy in the best way.

The pacing is tight, and the alternating POVs keep the tension high without feeling chaotic. The mystery builds naturally. Nothing feels like it’s trying too hard to trick you. The story isn’t playing 4D chess with the reader; it’s just laying down pieces and letting you spiral on your own.

The reveal of “D” initially threw me off. <spoiler>Coach Kendall being the antagonist</spoiler> didn’t feel explosive at first because he wasn’t heavily centered in the narrative. But thinking about it more, that absence is kind of the point. Power doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it hides behind respectability and titles. And in hindsight, the quiet positioning makes sense.

 Favorite. No debate. He is painfully realistic and extremely relatable without being overly gloomy or edgy about it. He’s not brooding for aesthetic reasons. He’s just a teenager trying to survive social humiliation, parental pressure, and his own overthinking brain. He feels like someone you actually went to high school with. His anxiety, his self-awareness, his loyalty are all perfectly balanced. He isn't too grumpy, not too soft. He's just right.

 She is an entitled white girl. Let’s call it what it is. I do sympathize with her perfectionism because I get that mindset—the constant pressure to be flawless, to win, to be the best. But she is deeply insecure and weaponizes it. She’s so privileged that she doesn’t realize she’s often the monster in her own narrative. With Daniel, for example, it’s very possible he didn’t “start” being cruel. She was threatened by him being smarter and younger, and decided to lash out first. He’s her little brother for goodness sake. For all we know, he’s been dealing with a mean, competitive older sister his whole life. Not to mention, Ivy’s choices trigger a chain reaction that hurts almost everyone. She’s complex, but she’s exhausting.

 Annoying, but in a deeply sad way. He’s naive. Childish sometimes. Emotionally stunted. And it’s painful that he doesn’t really have real friends. That loneliness bleeds through his chapters. What makes him frustrating is that we understand why Ivy is the way she is. With Cal, it feels like he just refuses to grow up. He needs to go outside. He needs to confront reality. It's not that he’s awful. He's just immature in a way that makes you want to shake him gently and say, “Please evolve beyond sixth grade for fuck's sake.”

 Dream blunt rotation. No notes. Peak chaotic energy. Every scene with him is better because he exists.

 The best friend we deserved more of. She feels grounded and loyal, and I wish we’d gotten more space with her because she adds emotional depth without adding drama.

 Solid. Calm. Refreshing. I’m genuinely glad Cal finds a friend in him by the end. It feels like the beginning of something healthier for him.

Least favorite by a landslide. <spoiler>She’s dating a student. She’s dating another student’s father. She tries framing Ivy. Twice. And the second time she drags Cal into it too.</spoiler> That’s messy and diabolical. Every time she appeared, I was side-eyeing my screen. The audacity levels were astronomical.

McManus’ writing is clean and addictive. It’s not trying to be overly clever. It’s not doing literary gymnastics to prove a point. The mystery unfolds without feeling manipulative. The dialogue feels natural. The emotional beats land. The structure is tight.

Nothing feels like it’s there just to shock you. Even the twists feel grounded in character decisions rather than random plot chaos. That’s why her books work so well. The drama grows out of people being messy, insecure, selfish, scared, and not because the author forced a twist for clout.

Absolutely. If you loved One of Us Is Lying and One of Us Is Next, this fits right into that lineup of addictive YA mysteries with morally questionable teens and secrets that refuse to stay buried. It’s high school drama with actual stakes.

I’d especially recommend it to readers who enjoy character-driven mysteries. The plot matters, yes, but the emotional baggage is what makes it hit.

I’m sorry but I legitimately thought there was a second book to it but when I looked it up and saw there wasn’t I was legitimately upset. Like I need answers, I need to know things end well not with how it ended here.

Another Karen M. McManus book for my collection! Although it does fit her brand of high school thriller that is fast paced and a quick read.

I wouldn’t say it’s her best but also not her worst. I enjoyed it for reading it in a day however, the characters are quiet forgetful and didn’t leave an impact on me. There was no character development through the book as it takes place over a day but also the pov’s weren’t distinctive enough. I found myself not knowing who I was reading from as they all blended in together and had the same voice.

I’m hoping her next book might be something a little different…maybe stepping outside the high school plot line

This book is amazing! I love this book. I love all of Karen’s books. 

Every once in a while I took some pauses to just think and try to form a theory, but none of my theories were (completely) correct. Thougth I might have to reread the ending (or even better, the whole book), because I’m not sure if I really know who actually killed the victim. I know who was behind it, but not who actually did it. Did I somehow miss it? Is there a sequel coming???

I have and always will love Karen M. McManus’s books. While currently there are 2 I have yet to read, she will be one of the ones I will always recommend. 

That being said, this book was not my favorite as it took me awhile to get into it (I know I say this a lot, but it took longer than normal). If it wasn’t for the audiobook, I probably wouldn’t be that far into it. I really enjoyed the audiobook and recommend using it while reading!

I will say that I had my suspicions about everything and yet every single one turned out either half way wrong or completely wrong! I’ve always been able to guess at least right before the big reveal and the only I was able to guess what the surprise of the last chapter!

So who doesn’t need a break from school? You lost the class president debate, you wanna relive old memories, and you just need a day off with old friends. You think you’re having a good day then all of a sudden you follow the new class president into a building and find him dead and now you’re to blame. You and the friends you’re with investigate because it don’t seem right. Something is fishy.

Karen McManus is an auto-read author for me and this did not disappoint! i found this to be a very fun, quick read with some good twists. however, the ending did fall just a little short for me. if you're looking for a fun, YA thriller this book (along with McManus' other works) is ya girl.

Can’t lie compared to the other KMM books I’ve read so far this one just felt really…bland? Like it was alright I had fun reading it but it was just not enough really…

I liked the MC’s again and the skipping school and getting caught up in a murder plot but it just didn’t really feel like it went as far as I wanted it to.

You'll Be the Death of Me is another easy to fly through mystery! I always enjoy the characters that Karen M. McManus writes. I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent with Ivy, Cal & Mateo. I will say that the big reveal felt a little messy for me. Overall though, I think this will be another one that my students will devour as fast as I did.

this was a really fast paced, gripping book! i actually think this is my favorite mcmanus book, i think the quick pace kept you hooked! i do wish that we could’ve connected with the characters a little bit more, i feel like i don’t know anything about them outside of the plot.
