This book was thoroughly enjoyable in both teaching about period Chinese culture, and in the wonderful fictional story of a boy coming of age. I read this book with my daughter for her school and I think I may have enjoyed it a bit more than she did. I don't always agree with the awards given to books, but in this case I think it is well deserved. The story is a real page turner, and the education you get about Chinese culture comes at you without the need for long descriptions of tedious details.
