Yūko Tsushima

A Novel

Territory of Light

Yuko Tsushima

From one of the most significant contemporary Japanese writers, a haunting, dazzling novel of loss and rebirth “Yuko Tsushima is one of the most important Japanese writers of her generation.” —Foumiko Kometani, The New York Times I was puzzled by how I had changed. But I could no longer go back . . . It is spring. A young woman, left by her husband, starts a new life in a Tokyo apartment. Territory of Light follows her over the course of a year, as she struggles to bring up her two-year-old daughter alone. Her new home is filled with light streaming through the windows, so bright she has to squint, but she finds herself plummeting deeper into darkness, becoming unstable, untethered. As the months come and go and the seasons turn, she must confront what she has lost and what she will become. At once tender and lacerating, luminous and unsettling, Yuko Tsushima’s Territory of Light is a novel of abandonment, desire, and transformation. It was originally published in twelve parts in the Japanese literary monthly Gunzo, between 1978 and 1979, each chapter marking the months in real time. It won the inaugural Noma Literary Prize.

The strength of
 Territory of Light
by Yuko Tsushima lies in its sharp social critiques, which draw powerful illustrations of the relentless pressure placed on single mothers, here embodied by the unnamed protagonist and her sole daughter. The two are stranded in an unknown territory; a dingy apartment that calls the absence of Fujino, her ex-husband and the father of their child. Alone and drifted in the harsh reality of being a single parent, the protagonist confronts the unending struggle to survive in the system that refuses to offer any support. As a single mother, the judgment she faces is not only overt cruelty but also a more insidious kind of "well-meaning" coercion. Tsushima shows how society disguises control as care, weaponizing "concern" and "experience" to enforce conformity. The calls from the divorcée and the professor are masterclasses in this subtle manipulation. What the divorcée offers isn’t genuine advice but a projection of her own regrets. She confesses, "the more it could be the old me he’s talking about." She is not really seeing the protagonist’s life; she is revisiting her own. Her grim warning—"It’s been downhill ever since"—is less an act of kindness than an attempt to validate her own choices by ensuring the protagonist follows the same trajectory. It is emotional blackmail in its most familiar form: "I suffered, so you must too, or else my suffering was meaningless." The professor’s words, meanwhile, carry a different sting. His "quiet manner" makes his pronouncements sound like neutral wisdom, but beneath that calmness lies sheer arrogance. His statement, "you won’t meet a better man than Fujino. The type of man you’ll meet will go steadily downhill. That’s a given," reduces a woman’s entire worth to the men she is able to attract, as if her value inevitably depreciates. He embodies the patriarchal logic that would rather see a woman trapped in an unhappy but socially acceptable marriage than free but stigmatized. And then there is Fujino. My anger toward him feels almost bottomless because he is the clearest symbol of the system’s hypocrisy. He faces none of the social condemnation the protagonist does, yet he piles responsibility onto her shoulders. He abandons his family, lives with another woman, and neglects his duties, yet somehow still holds the moral high ground in the eyes of others. The mediation room scene captures this injustice with painful clarity. His concern is purely performative: he does not want the constant, draining work of parenting, only the occasional "proprietary squeeze" that lets him feel like a father without ever acting like one. The system protects him and excuses his negligence while scrutinizing her every failure. Often, the protagonist’s suffocating sense of societal judgment takes form in the "shadowy figures" that appear in her mind. These "countless shadowy figures" are the embodiment of her internalized oppression, the nauseating, faceless weight of everyone who has judged her—the divorcée, the professor, Fujino, her family, the daycare mothers. They are the voices that haunt her even in solitude. This is the true horror of stigma: it doesn’t just come from outside, but eventually takes root inside, turning the victim into her own warden. When she wonders, "Must I go on, still, listening to that distant and increasingly incomprehensible voice?" she is fighting not only against Fujino but also against the internal chorus of condemnation he represents. The subplot of the woman whose apartment burns down is part of this same machinery of social warning. The daycare mothers discuss her tragedy with casual judgment: <blockquote>"‘I often saw her child wandering around at all hours,’ the other mother said, ‘and I thought this won’t do... I wonder what happens about compensation in these cases.’"</blockquote> The story becomes a cautionary tale aimed at women like the protagonist: This is what happens when single mothers fail. This could be your fate if you don’t muddle through perfectly. When the protagonist visits the burned-out site, she is confronting this specter directly. The ashes of that apartment are both literal and symbolic of the collapse that can result from immense pressure coupled with a lack of support. In a patriarchal world, women are placed on a pedestal only so they can be more easily ostracized when they fall. The ideal of the "good wife, wise mother" (ryōsai kenbo) is a trap. Once the marriage collapsed—through no fault of hers alone—the protagonist was cast down from that pedestal and denied even the support she needed as a mother. The novel makes clear that this patriarchal system was never designed to protect women or children; it exists to protect its own structure, prioritizing the reputation and convenience of men like Fujino. The very heart of the novel lies in its depiction of the brutal, messy, non-linear process of forging an identity from the wreckage of prescribed roles. The protagonist once performed the duties of wife and mother as she thought she was supposed to. But separation shattered the stage. Without Fujino to hand her a script, she is lost, exposed, raw. Her hyper-awareness of being watched—"I was suddenly conscious of the eyes of passers-by"—is proof of this. Society offers no positive script for single mothers, so every slip feels catastrophic. The demand to maintain "best behaviour" is exhausting, draining both her and her child. The shadowy figures are her internal critics, constant reminders that her every step is being judged. Her relationship with her daughter is where this struggle plays out most starkly. It is not a simple tale of maternal love; it is raw, volatile, and painfully honest. Her daughter embodies both her love and her resentment, both her hope and her crushing responsibility. The child's night terrors and rages are external manifestations of the mother's own internal chaos. The protagonist’s darkest urges—to scream vile abuse, to smother her—mirror her own suffocation under the weight of motherhood. The moment she admits, "What I’d failed to see so far, it turned out, was my own cruelty," is devastating. True autonomy requires not just resisting external oppression, but confronting the monster that exists within. Her relationship (or lapses of misjudgements out of loneliness) with Kawachi and Sugiyama is another false path of her journey of autonomy. They are not romantic subplots but failed experiments in identity. With Kawachi, her drunken, clumsy seduction is a humiliating performance of a role she thinks she must play—the available woman—underscored by power imbalance and self-loathing. When she cries, "Did it never occur to you to give me a hand?" it is less a plea to Kawachi than a scream against all men’s indifference, Fujino most of all. With Sugiyama, she chases not desire but the illusion of a family. Their domestic interludes—cooking, playing games, lazy afternoons—are wistful glimpses of the life she lost. Her proposal that he move in is less romantic than pragmatic, a plea for teamwork against societal isolation. His rejection ("the idea doesn’t interest me") is the painful confirmation that she cannot rebuild identity by recreating the family unit. One of the most touching of Yuko Tsushima’s narrative is her heartfelt way of tracing the arc of the protagonist's journey from being defined by others to claiming her own fragile, hard-won sense of self. She carefully charts the protagonist’s slow, flawed progress toward autonomy. The poetry tape in the opening chapter, with lines from Goethe’s Faust, serves as the catalyst: <blockquote>"Quick now, give up this idle pondering! And let’s be off into the great wide world!"</blockquote> She realizes she has lived passively, waiting for others—Fujino, society—to define her path. Touring apartments on her own becomes her first true act of self-determination. The dark, cramped rooms are "a far cry from those I’d toured with my husband," yet within their shadows she glimpses "a gleam... like that of an animal’s eyes"—scary, raw, but alive and her own. Choosing this imperfect, real space over the fantasy two-story house is her first true act of self-definition. Her rage toward Fujino is ultimately not about the divorce itself but about his erasure of her personhood: <blockquote>"You have eyes only for your daughter, you don’t see me at all."</blockquote> In his gaze, she is nothing but "the mother of his daughter," stripped of individuality. Denying him access to their child becomes her desperate act of self-preservation, her refusal to collapse back into a function. The hard-won divorce, dragged out over a brutal year, is a moment of both liberation and loss. "The magnitude of what I was now certain to lose was overwhelming." Tsushima refuses easy catharsis: autonomy does not come with clean triumph but with grief for what once was, what could never be. Her realization that "perhaps there existed a kind of bond that required both parties to believe themselves hated by the other" is one of the novel’s most haunting insights, showing how even separation requires its own form of myth-making. The quiet, tender scene where the protagonist and her daughter nurse each other toward the end of the novel offers a counterpoint to the violence of divorce. When the child says, "I’ll stay with you. You’re sick, aren’t you, Mommy?" it is not a performance of filial duty but a spontaneous recognition of her mother’s humanity. They create a fragile, self-sufficient world built not on social scripts but on reciprocity and care, however messy—spilled water on tatami and all. By the final part of the book, she has not become a triumphant independent woman. What she gains is more fragile but also more real: the autonomy to exist as a flawed, struggling human being who endures. The apartment flooded with light symbolizes this new territory, but the truer "territory of light" is her own self—messy, battered, but hers. Tsushima gives us no heroine who overcomes, but a woman who endures. And in that endurance, she claims the smallest but most precious of victories: the right to her own existence. In the end, what Tsushima leaves us with is not triumph, but the hard-earned dignity of a woman who, against everything, learns to stand in her own light.

'Wonderfully poetic ... extraordinary freshness ... a Virginia Woolf quality' Margaret Drabble Territory of Light is the luminous story of a young woman, living alone in Tokyo with her three-year-old daughter. Its twelve, stand-alone fragments follow the first year of the narrator's separation from her husband. The novel is full of light, sometimes comforting and sometimes dangerous: sunlight streaming through windows, dappled light in the park, distant fireworks, dazzling floodwater, desaturated streetlamps and mysterious explosions. The seemingly artless prose is beautifully patterned: the cumulative effect is disarmingly powerful, and bright after-images remain in your mind for a long time afterwards.

Territory of Light was a slow paced, yet emotional tale of a woman trying to navigate the heartbreak of a divorce and motherhood as it changes as a result of it.

The book doesn't have a rigid structure, it flows like the natural progression of time. The main character is hard not to root for, you can understand she's going through a very difficult time and she is suffering mentally a lot. Especially because her husband Fujino is a piece of work and completely useless. Sometimes her decision are horrible yet you still emphasise with her because despite it all shes in this alone now.

I think territory of light continues to highlight the pressure on women to "keep the family together" even when the husband is at fault and hes the one who wants to leave. It also highlights how easily society passes judgement on and chastises single mothers. Throughout this short book we see various characters including the main character herself blame herself even though its obvious her husband is TERRIBLE.

It was a frustrating read, especially because its not exactly action packed and I just wanted better for the main character. However I think its still worth reading because its honest. It doesn't glorify single motherhood, it doesn't portray the main character as exceedingly brave, it doesn't make the husband a cartoonish demon. It's just real.

got an idea with how yuko tsushima writes, and i think im starting to understand japanese authors and their choice of storytelling which they gravitate towards to when it comes to depictions of depression.

this book handles depression in a very slow manner, not in terms of pace but more towards the feeling. not groundbreaking but very texturised, a lot of the mood in it’s storytelling focuses a lot on the survivals of depression and never about the dramatic effects of writing behind it or the emotional impact  of it. kinda of underlines the story in between those two, which i can understand and appreciate, but not a story i’d feel inclined to read it again. a lot of moody writing, emotional subtlety, where tsushima rejects most transformation and embraces survival as a non cinematic aspect of storytelling — feeling the sense of being in the story but not really moving through it psychologically.

i like the underlying literary elements of light beng a core subject in the story and how it symbolises the slow illumination of the self and how healing happens in small, uneven bursts, and not in a straight line. of course, here, freedom is not romanticised, it is very fragile and i guess this is what the book was meant to convey. in a world where women rejoice on limitations of women and fighting for our freedom, the novel critiques gender expectations and shows how society pushes women back into traditional family roles even when those roles harm them.

may seem like an easy read, but i feel that the prose can be difficult for some. i do appreciate the vivid imagery, but the plot does get frustrating at times. very lovely representation of a young mum struggles as she grows up while being a mother too

Every time I rate something three stars, I wish there were half-options. This is a firm 3.5, bleak, enchanting, wounding. I waffle between feeling sorry for her and being frustrated with her, and wondering how upset her daughter must be as they dredge through miserable and few options together. At points I wonder what the crux of the issue is, why her husband is the way he is, and there's a sliver, a glint of mental illness that's danced upon but never touched. I find this happening often in books with authors from Asia, but all too often it's done in that delicate way in many American novels as well - from the perspective of the protagonist or storyteller, it's not so stark as to be named but rather woven into their life. While reading, you muse on the people you pass by every day that have this going on and are pulling themselves through it all - haven't you done the same? In the same vein, it's uncomfortably honest at points and you want to look away, frustrated for the person and child she's supposed to be taking care of but also understand how one could be at the end of their rope. The imagery is powerful; there isn't a note of hope at the end, though. You're frustrated watching it all and even the ending feels fragile, tentative. I'd read more by this author.
