Was furious when I found this book in my school library (in China) and realised it had been completely Americanised (due to import restrictions, almost all our titles come from American publishers). 
There is nothing wrong with Australian English - it gives a sense of place and community. It should not be erased for another market. Honour all Englishes and don't dumb down a text for other markets.
