Pavonini

Better than I expected. Was just reading as a distraction from illness (somehow, Dworkin didn't quite do the trick). Found it on my kindle - had obviously got it a while ago and forgotten. It started off as fairly standard fantasy fare (female teen lead), then there were a few moments where it started to interest me more. I wasn't that into the lead, but I liked the world - not too much effort into making it "weird" so lots of things were the same (e.g. foods), and the larger scenario of an invading force subjugating and semi-integrating over time I liked. Good simple religions based around elements.

Weak spots for me were probably the sense of time, and the characters. The writing was ok - I mean, for me there's a sort of spectrum:

[noticeably bad] ------------------ [average] ------------------- [noticeably good]

Everything in the middle just doesn't command my attention particularly. I didn't get so irritated that I stopped, and it didn't hinder my reading. YMMV.
