Reading Zora Neale Hurston's perspective on Jamaica and Haiti in the 1930s is interesting, especially when you consider it as a part of her adventurous life. The best parts of this book are the parts told in her voice, showing us what she experienced first-hand. But large portions of the book are dry descriptions of rituals or beliefs, and those parts were less successful, in my opinion. Her writing is always clear and descriptive, but I just didn't find those parts as interesting as the people she met and the experiences she had with them.
