With the sudden influx of money, and a new lifestyle, norms are challenged and problems brew slowly at every end. Most of them remain unspoken throughout the book, it’s something you feel.

This is a translated work (originally written in Kannada) and I think it’s a decent read you can finish in a day. Felt bleak at times.

Personally, not a big fan. I hate the family and all the members. I don’t appreciate their attitude. Money doesn’t buy class, sure.

El relato me fascinó, de cierta forma logré entrar a la intimidad de esta familia india y entender sus problemas y desafíos. Es un libro pequeño, que se lee en una tarde, pero es realmente bueno; desnuda tantas verdades y secretos que vi en India. Es absolutamente recomendable.

Promises the depth of oceanic trenches, but leaves you in waters so shallow you can see your toes nibbling at the sand. There is however, respite in the way the narrative stitches the rags of the dysfunctional family, their motives reflected more in silences than in words, their actions encumbered by a nearly shameless aspiration to hang on to a lifestyle brought to them by another. Shanbhag proves to be a restrained writer, and if at all there's more for me to dig for the things left unsaid in his book, it will come from a more patient second read.

യൂ ആർ അനന്തമൂർത്തിയുടെ മരുമകനാണ് വിവേക്. കന്നഡയിൽ എഴുതിയ നോവെല്ല ആദ്യം ഇന്ത്യൻ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലേയ്ക്കും, പിന്നെ "പ്രോപ്പർ" ഇംഗ്ളീഷിലേയ്ക്കും പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തിയെന്നാണ് പറയുന്നത് (എന്തിനെന്ന് അറിയില്ല, ഇതറിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ വെറുതെ ടുട്ടുവോളയെ ഓർത്തു). വായനക്കാർക്ക്, വിശിഷ്യാ ഇന്ത്യൻ സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ എന്ത് സംഭവിയ്ക്കുന്നു എന്ന് ആകാംക്ഷയുള്ളവർക്ക്, റെക്കമെന്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നു.

I really enjoyed this look inside an Indian family. I like books that are translated to English when they give you a mix of the universal and the local (non-American), which this does with simplicity and humor. It made me think about how much we are connected with our families in good and bad ways, and how those connections change over time. My favorite quote is "The well-being of any household rests on selective acts of blindness and deafness."

As others have noted, this reads like a short play.

This packed a punch, despite being so short. Definitely said more in the words that were omitted - for that reason I think this is one of those books that would be a different reading experience for everyone, depending on personal experience that frames connotations. I loved it!

a short 115 page book , translated from Kannada , about a family and their transformation around money! what's cool?? this tiny book has a lot of transitions and the end is gonna hold u there thinking what might have happened??

the title is aptly made! its Ghachar Ghochar everywhere , entangled with money , what it can make people do and what it can turn them into! a must read , if u ask me.
