Albert Camus

Through the story of an ordinary man unwittingly drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach, Camus explored what he termed "the nakedness of man faced with the absurd." First published in 1946; now in a new translation by Matthew Ward.

My father bought me this book, saying it was beautiful. I will note, the prose was excellent. But it was too goddamned pretentious for me. I feel like it switches genres much too fast, going from a normal drama to a numbing drama that I couldn't even enjoy. And I like David Foster Wallace. It is bad, but it sticks in my mind in the worst way possible. Just read the Cliffsnotes.

It feels as though this book didn't have enough substance, I admit the meaning is wonderful and the last pages are greatly executed; it feels pretty boring. Like I was forcing myself to find interest in the book often. I wouldn't call this a bad book but somewhat disappointing for me. I'm still a bit perplexed, honestly.

Albert Camus' laconic masterpiece about a Frenchman who murders an Arab in colonial Algeria is famous in its time for diagnosing a state of alienation and spiritual exhaustion which summed up the mood of the mid-twentieth century. Today, more than fifty years after its first appearance, we can see that this early success was no passing fashion: The Outsider continues to speak to us of ultimate things with the force of a parable and the excitement of a thriller and remains one of the most widely read and influential classics of the century.

It’s fine but my reading experience was so choppy that I never felt fully gripped by the story

The Stranger A quick read about a man who murdered another man, and I don't know whether it is suffering or something else, but he seems unable to feel anything about what he has done. At the same time, he feels everything that is happening around him the environment, the sunlight, the sea, and the beauty of the world. I know what that feels like. It's like wanting to detach yourself from the world and simply exist in the moment, taking in the environment and its beauty while keeping a sense of calmness in your mind. But yeah, it was hard to digest how people judged him more for not showing emotions at his mother's funeral than for the actual murder. That part was genuinely sad and thought-provoking. An excellent read. Go for it. ✌🏻

I am still trying to find the purpose behind this short novel, with my previous tries gone in vain. I dont see the hype behind this novel; such a great plot idea regarding human detatchment from society yet such a poor execution. I dont see why people end up recommending this book. Lastly, very disappointing ending

A slow one and one of my first more serious social books for a lack of better words. It is very stand offish but an interesting, quick read.

self-intuitive and reflective, this novel truly is a masterpiece, and so fucking clever. the apathy that the narrator carrie’s with him gives such an innately interesting air to the entire course of the novel - it is really one of those books that you sit and stare at the wall after you’ve read. there’s so much to be analysed and drawn from on the portrayal of existentialism through the lense of an absurdist writer, especially due to the perspective that the story is told! the pacing is great; the way it utilised this tension through it was so clever, camus is a master of his craft. my only quarm is in the moments that couldn’t quite find that balance between absurdist thought and the course of the plot, as some moments lacked the deeper element whilst others had too much, to the point where the book felt stuck in its place and didn’t progress.

the style of writing is so intriguing to me. it feels so modern, yet the book itself was written 80 years ago, so i’m not sure if that is the result of translation or the genuine style that camus inbeds, as this is his first work i’ve read, however i will have a look at the original french version for insight :)

i also think that this is one of my favourite closing lines of a book, i audibly gasped as the phrase ended, so mind blowingly smart and reflective. i also relate to it in a really weird way that is super seperate from the philosophical purpose and prose, as an autistic person.  there are moments where i really relate to mersault, the almost separated feeling from your surroundings really resonated with me weirdly.

def recommend, think it would have been a great text to fully analyse!

I haven’t read fiction this arresting in a long time. The opening line alone is so remarkable that I had to take a pause and gear up for what followed. The story of Meursault is that he fails to live with a narrative to please societal expectations.

Camus stages a thought experiment with the help of Meursault: What happens if a man refuses to lie emotionally in a world that requires it?

The book is about the punishment you get for not living up to social expectations regardless of how you feel.

Meursault is ruthless, but in an honest way that intends no harm for others and yet, he’s punished for being that way.

About the writing, Matthew Ward’s translation serves as a charming, magnetic outlook into the story of Meursault. It’s easy to step into his world, but impossible to judge his actions comfortably.

A lot more thoughts to be shared, a lot more conversations to be had about this book.
