An acclaimed Swedish author makes her English language debut with this intoxicating novel in the vein of Rachel Cusk and Sheila Heti, about a woman in the throes of a fever remembering the important people in her past, her memories laid bare in vivid detail as her body temperature rises. A woman lies bedridden from a high fever. Suddenly she is struck with an urge to revisit a novel from her past. Inside the book is an inscription: a get-well-soon message from Johanna, an ex-girlfriend who is now a famous television host. As she flips through the book, pages from the woman's own past begin to come alive, scenes of events and people she cannot forget. There are moments with Johanna, and Niki, the friend who disappeared years ago without a phone number or an address and with no online footprint. There is Alejandro, who gleefully campaigns for a baby even though he knows their love has no future. And Brigitte, whose elusive qualities mask a painful secret. The Details is a novel built around four portraits; the small details that, pieced together, comprise a life. Can a loved one really disappear? Who is the real subject of the portrait, the person being painted or the one holding the brush? Do we fully become ourselves through our connections to others? This exhilarating, provocative tale raises profound questions about the nature of relationships, and how we tell our stories. The result is an intimate and illuminating study of what it means to be human.

Ever since my friendship with Niki, I think of the anecdote as a form of chronic illness that attaches itself to some people; that compulsion to tell everything in the shape of a story, to turn life into a formula meant to captivate, impress, upset, or inspire laughter.

- tl;dr you’re sick and you feel like recounting the friends you’ve lost and the lives you’ve buried. how swell!

- long and winding paragraphs, but not a difficult read at all

- first three chapters are constant mouthfuls of bittersweet charm and then the last chapter will make you want to vomit. hits like a cannonball and puts the rest of the book in a whole new lens

- had so many thoughts about this being quite sweet and relaxing and a super easy recommendation for anyone but the last chapter has left me totally stunned. leaves you with some really dark notes

- i didn’t realize this was shortlisted for the international booker prize until i was maybe halfway in... which might make this the first booker prize related book i’ve ever read? i can’t recall any others

The stories in The Details move with a kind of effortless grace, pulling me in as if the pages themselves were alive. There’s a magic in the way Genberg shapes her chapters—like a stream of consciousness that flows seamlessly, weaving itself into the narrative she’s building. It’s subtle but striking, leaving me underlining almost half of the book. 

The characters, the dialogue, the world—they’re all so full, so dense, yet they feel entirely unforced, as if they’ve always existed this way. Together, they become this vessel that somehow captures the human experience with clarity, like holding a mirror up to emotions that are usually hard to capture in writing. 

The book reminds me of the Before Trilogy—where nothing monumental happens and yet everything does. It’s a kind of storytelling that doesn’t just unfold, but resonates. And by the end, it leaves me full of longing for my friends, family, and the small but profound connections that shape my life.

The writing style is simple yet poignant, and the author is able to create such vivid, human pictures of each person that touches our narrator’s life. One of my favourite works of the “nothing happens” book genre.

The premise of this book as described by the translator is "a book where nothing really happens", an accumulation of details, as the title suggests. As I read, however, I quickly realised this is a book where everything happens: a book that encompasses life itself. Through the depictions and memories with people she loves, Genberg beautifully weaves together small moments packed with immense feeling, moments set in a time and place so far away yet I found myself in all the same. The writing is simple yet unforgettable, so many places highlighted and left to ponder over, The Details has easily become one of my favorite reads of the year, a book I will keep coming back to.
