I was no prepared at all. My heart is thoroughly shattered and I am left contemplative in the end. Overall, I am unwell, and yet, I absolutely loved this. <br /><br />This novella is told from the pov of a complete introvert who is brought out of his shell briefly by love. <br /><br />I love that even though this book was written a long time ago it is still something you’re able to identify with in terms of solitude, introversion, and love.

In the stories in this volume Dostoevsky explores both the figure of the dreamer divorced from reality and also his own ambiguous attitude to utopianism, themes central to many of his great novels. In White Nights the apparent idyll of the dreamer's romantic fantasies disguises profound loneliness and estrangement from 'living life'. Despite his sentimental friendship with Nastenka, his final withdrawal into the world of the imagination anticipates the retreat into the 'underground' of many of Dostoevsky's later intellectual heroes. A Gentle Creature and The Dream of a Ridiculous Man show how such withdrawal from reality can end in spiritual desolation and moral indifference and how, in Dostoevsky's view, the tragedy of the alienated individual can be resolved only by the rediscovery of a sense of compassion and responsibility towards fellow human beings.

Agh, White Nights really hits different. The narrator's loneliness, the softness, the way he gets overlooked again and again... it's beautiful and brutal at the same time. Loved some parts of this book though. And Nastenka... I genuinely have no words.

regarding white nights, i honestly wish i could've liked it more! i was so ready to fall in love with it, but it left me a bit disappointed. i deeply related to the dreamer's loneliness, but when from that loneliness stemmed the unrequited love – a sentiment so estranged to me – i felt less immersed. not that i wish to syndicate what an author ought to write, i have no right to that, but when you so immediately identify with a character that is so painstakingly, almost hauntingly similar to your own self... the smallest deviation from your reality will haul you back to your senses, and make you look at the character in a more objective, detached manner. so i couldn't very much pity the dreamer when nastenka left him, not in the way i pitied him when he was raving about his loneliness.

ironically enough, i think i liked bobok more (i have the penguin classics edition).

For me, it's just a beautifully written tale of a hopeless romantic man getting friendzoned, lol. Tho, the loneliness, longing and brief connection hits even when ends exactly how you'd expect.

A love that only lasted for a few days. Was it even love? Or were they only bonded by the discrepancies of their heart and soul? Others blamed Nastenka for rekindling hope that she would love the dreamer and someday forget about the man who promised to be with her after a year. Truly, she was wrong for not having enough patience and being impulsive. But at their first meeting, she made it clear that he must not fall for her as she is still deeply broken and her loyalty stands with the man she loves. He knew the repercussions of his feelings yet he still chose to confess.

Honestly, they're both responsible for the weight of their choices. I couldn't make worthy stands since it was them who made it so heavy.

And I was completely amazed by the passage...so well-written. The profound human emotions were there, it wasn't subtly defined! I love, love that these instances happen in real life, and the characters handled it so well. Not perfect, but real. It's just I was expecting so much because I was utterly taken by the reviews from different communities online!

More than unrequited love, this is about loneliness, how a lonely mind conjures up things and how that fickle heart falls.

It’s a thoughtful novel I really enjoyed. I’ve heard people say the main theme is unrequited love, yet for me it’s way deeper than that. It’s about a human being who is an outsider, and the human nature of people, rooted deep down in our DNA, to feel part of a group, to not feel alone. From the very beginning we can feel the urge of the protagonist to share his life to somebody, to feel seen and understood in a world totally shut from him. He is a man deprived of a human acquaintance and he falls in love with the first person to give him the bare minimum- kindness and understanding. The book is about loneliness. It’s about a person who is too afraid to live, and so he lives by daydreaming, hoping that would be sufficient, yet it never is.

white nights was very hard to grasp at first—the pacing felt slow, and the narrator’s dreamy, overly sentimental tone made it difficult to connect with what he was saying. but as the story neared its end, everything started to fall into place, and i was left feeling genuinely pitiful for the narrator. he was just a lonely man who longed for connection, pouring all his emotions into this brief encounter that meant the world to him. what made it worse was how nastenka, despite her gentle and kind exterior, turned out to be a bit of a red flag. she let him fall for her even while she was clearly still holding on to another man—someone she claimed she loved, but who abandoned her for a year. she used the narrator for emotional support, then left him the moment her old flame came back. the ending hit hard, not just because of the heartbreak, but because dostoevsky made it so painfully real—how some people are meant to pass through our lives, leaving behind joy and ruin all at once.

I can’t believe this story was published over 100 years ago, it’s so beautiful. So filled with love. Ugh.

The way I understand both sides…

This was the first work I've read by Fydor Dostoevsky, and it left a lasting impression. The story beautifully illustrates the depth of loneliness and the human longing for connection. 

On the first night, the nameless narrator—Who introduces himself as a "dreamer"—meets Nastekna in the quiet solitary evening. From that night, she makes her intentions clear, warning him not to fall in love with her. Yet, driven by his profound loneliness, he idealises their brief time together, which only deepens the heartbreak that follows.

After finishing this book, I found myself staring at the veiling for what felt like 30 minutes…thinking. As someone, or for anyone who releates the dreamer, it's a reminder how loneliness can quietly consume us, and how even the smallest interactions with somone can stir emotions we didn't realise we were holding back.
