I must say this most definitely was not the most pleasant read of them all. I actually struggled, a lot. I got 150 something pages done in about 3 weeks time, and read the final 130 in a single day.

This is a bleak book, a sad and depressing book. It is utterly hopeless from beginning to end. It is somewhat unenjoyable. However, the way Cormac McCarthy wrote this, makes it absolutely incredible and most of all, memorable.

It is not your usual tale of apocalyptic survival. It does not even care to explain how we even got to the end of the world in the first place, but it does not need to. The father-son dynamic is the main event here, and it is just unmatched. There are honestly so many fantastic lines by Cormac here, I find myself opening random pages and finding lines many writers could only dream of writing. He also does this weird thing in the way he goes from telling the tale in the 3rd person, to delving into the father's thoughts, to dialogue, to technical sequences involving different artifacts and tools. He mixes it all in one big amazing and unique literal soup, and I thought it was pretty original. Maybe all his books are written like this, I am new to him as an author, so, I couldn't say.

Again, it is tiring to say the least. There is not a moment to catch one's breath, every situation is a dangerous one, and it's realism only builds on that tediousness all throughout. But it is great nonetheless.

I really do recommend people give this one a try, it is a beautiful tale in its own way. 8/10. Hello LITERAL.

With an introduction by novelist John Banville. In a burned-out America, a father and his young son walk under a darkened sky, heading slowly for the coast. They have no idea what, if anything, awaits them there. The landscape is destroyed, nothing moves save the ash on the wind and cruel, lawless men stalk the roadside, lying in wait. Attempting to survive in this brave new world, the young boy and his protector have nothing but a pistol to defend themselves. They must keep walking. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, The Road is an incandescent novel, the story of a remarkable and profoundly moving journey. In this unflinching study of the best and worst of humankind, Cormac McCarthy boldly divines a future without hope, but one in which, miraculously, this young family finds tenderness. An exemplar of post-apocalyptic writing, The Road is a true modern classic, a masterful, moving and increasingly prescient novel.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE The searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive. A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation. It was nice to read about one of the books The Walking Dead was influenced by. I wouldn’t have made it through this book has I not watched The Walking Dead. I was able to visualize and imagine the man and boy much more clearly because of the show so I enjoyed it more than I would’ve before.

The searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece.

The first-ever graphic novel adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize–winning postapocalyptic classic, The Road, approved and authorized by McCarthy and illustrated by acclaimed cartoonist Manu Larcenet "Superb. A suitably dark graphic treatment of McCarthy’s postapocalyptic masterpiece." (Kirkus) The story of a nameless father and son trying to survive with their humanity intact in a postapocalyptic wasteland where Earth’s natural resources have been diminished, and some survivors are left to raise others for meat, The Road is one of Cormac McCarthy’s bleakest and most prescient novels. Dedicated to his son, John Francis McCarthy, McCarthy’s The Road is one of his most personal novels. Ranked 17th on The Guardian’s 100 Best Novels of the 21st century, it was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for literature, and the James Tait Black Memorial Award, the Believer Award, and it was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award. This first official graphic novel adaptation of McCarthy’s work is illustrated by acclaimed French cartoonist Manu Larcenet, who ably transforms the world depicted by McCarthy’s spare and brutal prose into stark ink drawings that add an additional layer to this haunting tale of family love and human perseverance. Cormac McCarthy personally approved the making of this book before his death, and the adaptation bears the approval of the McCarthy estate.

A Graphic Novel Adaptation

Ah Cormac, you’ve done it again with the frustratingly unresolved endings. I was drawn in by the utter illegibility of your philosophy. It will take years of random wondering for me to get even halfway to the bottom of what you wanted this book to say.

A heart-wrenching and visionary tale of humanity and pain. McCarthy uses his extraordinary command of language to deliver some of the deepest, darkest literature ever written—through stark, simple prose.

The skills he honed over a career of writing westerns, grit-lit, and crime novels all converge here to create one of the greatest dystopian novels—and possibly one of the greatest works of fiction—ever written.

McCarthy delivers a classic through unnamed characters and simple yet moving prose. Somewhere in an interview McCarthy said something along the lines of, when writing a post-apocolyptic novel, you are actually making a case for what is most important to carry into a post-civilization world. Having this in mind, McCarthy shows a complex human experience of making meaning in a seemingly meaningless world.

The reading of Christian symbolism in particular (Father=Father, Son=Son, The Fire = The Holy Spirit) is something I want to talk about explicitly because I think McCarthy offers readers a more complex view of faith and religion than is often given. Throughout the novel there is frequent mention of God and faith and the idea of "carrying the fire" seems to be surrounded by pro-God/ Christianity commentary, saying that God has provided humanity with life or moral good, making it necessary to carry on in the face of evil. I don't think this is what McCarthy is saying however, he frequently shows the anger and nihilism of trying to apply and old way of thinking and faith to a world that is completely void of "moral good." I think that what McCarthy is really getting at is that God is not the reason humanity needs to carry on but instead the want to honor those who came before us, and to live and create new experiences and stories for generations after us, to carry on the collective memory of what humans or the world can be.

McCarthy novels always seem to me like they’re taking place 100 years on the past somehow. Even when they’re roughly modern there’s an antiquity to his language and whatnot that screams of olden days.

Dropping into this in media res, a clearly modern landscape charred by some unclear but surely man made disaster the narrow scope of the story telling is remarkably gripping. It is the sparest and most direct human drama he’s done, maybe?

I don’t like playing that card, but also: reading as a dad is a whole other level of gutting.

As my second Cormac book (other being "Blood Meridian"), I was slightly disappointed by this not being quite as poetic in diction. In the end, it made for simpler reading to better focus on the two characters and their story rather than create a painting with each line.

Obviously "The Road" is quite grim. The world is over and there's seemingly no hope for a return to it, only what is now and surviving through the night, each night. However, our two characters (who're never named) share a bond that keeps them going. The determination and positivity of the man is truly inspiring. He tells you time and time again that his son is the only thing keeping him going. Perhaps it is true; what is certain is he's the only thing keeping him from becoming evil. Others on the road don't have a reason and thus have descended into cannibalism and madness. It's a disgusting world, yet the man wants the boy to "carry the fire" as long as humanly possible.

I loved this book. The moments of happiness are as high as the sadness is low. I think this was the first time in a long time a book made me cry and had me physically struggling to read the last two pages through tears. Cormac McCarthy knew damn well that life is all encompassing, the beauty and the pain are inseparable. I'd have loved to have shaken his hand.

I highly recommend "The Road".

Empty and more than a little pretentious.

There's the seed of a good plot here, but that's all there is. This is not a novel; it's an empty sketch of one. The apocalypse setting is never explained or defined and rarely even alluded to. The dialogue is hands-down the worst I've ever read. It's like listening to two Siri apps talk to each other.

There are some interesting imagery, but its undercut by the clunky writing. Mccarthy seems intent on writing in mostly sentence fragments or confusingly structured sentences. He also inexplicably omits commas and apostrophes when he feels like it. It took more effort to take these out than it did to put them in, and what purpose does their absence serve besides annoying the reader? This seems like it was written by a particularly pretentious and unimaginative ninth-grader who got mostly C's in English class.

There is absolutely no plot to speak of, the nameless characters just wander around Nowheresville, USA, occasionally running into cannibals or insane old men, but most of the time, no one. I found it unbelievable that they never run into any animals. It would be much more interesting to see the characters try to catch fish or hunt rabbits rather than stumble upon a storehouse full of canned beans.

There's not much else to say here. This is the most overblown and overrated novel I've read in a long time. If this tripe was written by any other author, it would be sent to the trash bin, but since this is a famous author he gets Oprah awards. This had the potential to be something great, but it's just so lazy. This is a book that substitutes characterization, character growth, plot, and setting for little bunches of pretty, shallow description.

Read this after seeing Neil Druckmann speak about it as an inspiration for The Last of Us.

Extremely well written. A lot of the book is the man and boy scavenging; it’s woven with these metaphors that make the mundane descriptions interesting.

What really stands out to me is the idea of being the “good guy”. Does it make you the bad guy to protect your son no matter what, or is that inherently good?

I loved when the boy asks these questions that surprises the dad. They seem out of place in their situation, but were common questions in the world before. Things like, “what are our long term goals?”

I first read this book several years ago, as my first taste of McCarthy, and loved it. Now, after having read his entire bibliography (in roughly reverse chronological order), I revisited this great novel. It's interesting to recognize parts of his earlier works in this; it feels like a distilled version of McCarthy's writing, a culmination of his themes and prose. Even less plot than in his other books, fewer characters (and none named), even sparser prose and more powerful language. It's not his most gruesome story, but it's his bleakest and most desperate (among many other bleak and desperate ones like Blood Meridian. The overarching themes of redemption and perseverance in the face of strife from novels like Outer Dark are even starker.

Started reading to calm my mind and fall asleep in the evening. Finished at 4 AM with my heart pounding. Gripping. Dark.
