English summary: This study aims at an interpretation of the relationship between individual and the society as described in the laws of the book of Deuteronomy and equivalent documents from the ancient Greek world. German description: Die Beziehungen zwischen Individuum und Gesellschaft in den Gesetzestexten des Deuteronomiums (Dtn 2-5; 16-18; 20 und 21f.) und in legislativen wie auch literarischen antiken griechischen Texten werden erstmals in dieser interdisziplinaren und vergleichenden Studie untersucht, die zum Ergebnis kommt, dass es zwar kein einheitliches Gesetz im Mittelmeerraum gegeben habe, dafur aber immerhin gemeinsame Grunduberzeugungen, die sich auch in den Gesetzgebungen niederschlugen. Die Prasentation der bislang kaum bekannten griechischen Quellen verleiht dem Werk Editionscharakter.

Die Sammlung von 18 Essays verortet das Hohelied in seinem geschichtlichen Kontext und erörtert Probleme der Rezeptionsgeschichte. Im Gegensatz zu früheren Sammlungen findet - neben dem ägyptischen und altorientalischen Material - die griechische Liebeslyrik hier breite Berücksichtigung. Im Rahmen der Rezeptionsgeschichte wird die Bedeutung des Hohenlieds in der byzantinischen und der mittelalterlichen Welt sowie in der romantischen und neugriechischen Literatur bestimmt. Durch den interdisziplinären Zugang zum biblischen Text werden neue Pfade der Interpretation beschritten.

The collection of essays contains nineteen contributions that aim at locating the Song of Songs in its ancient context as well as addressing problems of interpretation and the reception of this biblical book in later literature. In contrast to previous studies this work devotes considerable attention to parallels from the Greek world without neglecting the Ancient Near East or Egypt. As far as the reception-history is concerned, several contributions deal with the use of the Song in Byzantine, Medieval, German Romantic and modern Greek Literature. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the collection new perspectives and avenues of appraoch are opened.
