Creolization, the process of cultural interchange--in this case, between peoples of the continents bordering the Atlantic Ocean--is an important aspect of the American experience. Language, literature, food, dress, and social relations are all affected by the interplay of cultures. Only recently, though, have scholars fully begun to understand creolization as a mutual exchange rather than the acculturation of colonized peoples to a dominant culture. Focusing on diverse settings and different aspects of culture, five scholars here examine the process of creolization: its origins, historical and modern meanings of the term, and the various manifestations of the complex, continuing process of cultural exchange and adaptation that began when Africans, American Indians, and Europeans came into contact with each other. While the authors vary in their approaches and, in some respects, their conclusions, they essentially agree that the notion of cultural syncretism--whether described as acculturation or creolization--is a conceptual tool of crucial importance for analyzing the interchange that occurred between peoples of Europe and the Americas. Ce livre retrace l'origine et le développement du service des fortifications avant 1650. L'auteur y dévoile la carrière et les travaux des ingénieurs chargés d'exécuter la politique royale française qui se précise dès le XVIe siècle, bien avant Vauban. L'efficacité de l'artillerie française et la création d'un nouveau système de fortification en Italie ne sont pas sans influencer les constructions de la Renaissance : les rois de France vont bénéficier, dans les années 1530-1560, du savoir-faire des ingénieurs italiens. Le service des fortifications s'organise au début du XVIIe siècle, pendant les années de paix du règne de Henri IV : la répartition des crédits entre les provinces frontières commande la planification des travaux. Les ingénieurs de Louis XIII, bien que plus nombreux, ressemblent à ceux du règne précédent. Ils sont français et appartiennent souvent à des dynasties d'ingénieurs, mais ils deviennent beaucoup plus mobiles pour répondre rapidement aux situations d'urgence. Les rois de France s'attachent ainsi les meilleurs experts dans les domaines les plus divers, - mathématiques, architecture, hydraulique, voies de communication -, et leurs ingénieurs vont s'affirmer comme de grands inventeurs après Léonard de Vinci, Dürer et d'autres... Ces ingénieurs sont des constructeurs, mais aussi d'habiles dessinateurs et des cartographes appliqués qui vont renouveler la production française et donner, grâce à l'imprimé, une bonne image de la France à leurs compatriotes. Par ailleurs, les forteresses rappellent aux Français qu'ils sont les sujets d'un monarque qui veut régner sur un royaume fort et uni.
