Edmonde Charles-Roux ressuscite Don Juan d'Autriche (1545-1578), le bâtard de Charles Quint, avec élégance et pénétration. Elle reconstitue l'atmosphère d'une époque où les costumes, les ambitions, les passions rutilaient plus qu'aujourd'hui. Dominant sa documentation avec maîtrise, Edmonde Charles-Roux se fait successivement historien militaire, spécialiste des armes et des costumes, maître des cérémonies, théologien, mémorialiste, romancier d'aventures et d'amour. Elle réussit particulièrement bien ses « grandes scènes » : la bataille de Lépante ; l'entrevue entre Don Juan d'Autriche et une ancienne lavandière de Ratisbonne, Barbe Plumberger, qui est sa mère : « Une femme entra, lourde, la jambe courte, le sourcil épais, outrageusement fardée... » ; l'entrée de don Juan à Grenade, « coiffé d'un toquet de velours, orné d'une longue plume d'autruche que retenait une grosse émeraude ». Edmonde Charles-Roux suit à la trace le mystère de ce bâtard qui remporta à vingt-six ans, sur les Turcs, une des plus grandes batailles de l'histoire, qui fut le premier chevalier de la chrétienté, qui faillit épouser deux reines. Elle nous donne le tableau le plus saisissant de ses derniers combats dans les Flandres, et enfin de sa mort, pendant la peste de Namur, dans un pigeonnier que l'on dut débarrasser de sa fiente et asperger de parfums.

Que savait-on, jusqu'à ce livre, de cette jeune femme d'origine russe, née en 1877, morte en 1904, qui décida de se convertir à l'islam et de rompre avec les moeurs de son temps ? Qui choisit de porter des vêtements d'homme avant de devenir, sous le nom de Mahmoud Saadi, cette rebelle qui fascina Lyautey, éprise d'absolu et proche du Rimbaud ? Pour Edmonde Charles-Roux, il y avait là toute la matière d'un prodigieux roman vrai. A travers des archives inédites, elle a ainsi recomposé l'itinéraire d'une héroïne « irrégulière » et mystique. Elle l'a suivie depuis sa naissance sur les rives du lac Léman jusqu'à l'instant où Isabelle accepte d'assumer le « désir d'Orient » qui la hante. On voit alors, dans une prodigieuse résurrection, toutes les figures dostoievskiennes qui ont accompagné sa jeunesse et forgé son insoumission. De la Russie des tsars à Genève puis à Marseille, de la diaspora anarchiste aux milieux littéraires, de l'exil à la révolte, c'est toute une époque qui se révèle dans l'effervescence d'un Occident qui va changer de siècle. Nomade j'étais couvre les années africaines d'Isabelle, jusqu'à sa mort, à vingt-sept ans. La voici confrontée à de multiples épreuves : la médiocrité du frère aimé Augustin ; son mariage avec Slimène Ehni, spahi algérien ; un procès ignoble qui l'expulse d'Algérie et la sépare de son mari. Mais elle revient vers la terre élue et, dès lors, « entre en nomadisme comme on entre en religion ». C'est à Aïn Sefra, où elle était en reportage, qu'elle trouva la mort un après-midi d'octobre 1904, engloutie dans les eaux d'un oued. C'est grâce au jeune lieutenant Paris, un des admirables personnages secondaires qui gravitent autour d'Isabelle et qui entreprendra de fouiller les décombres boueux, que ses manuscrits parviendront jusqu'à nous.
