Erich Hackl

This novel is based on the true story of a murder in Spain in 1931. Aurora Rodriquez, a product of bourgeois Spanish society, projected her political and philosophical ideas on her daughter whose conception (with a renegade priest) was pre-arranged. Hildegart appeared to be living out her mother's dreams, when at age 17, she becomes torn between lusty desires and her political destiny and her mother decides she must end her failed experiment.

Rudi Friemel fights for the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. When the Republican Front collapses, he is interned in France, sent to a Gestapo prison in Vienna, and then on to Auschwitz. From the camp, he petitions to be allowed to marry Marga, his sweetheart and the mother of his child. Eventually his petition is granted. The officials who spend all their time registering the deaths now register a marriage. A survivor reports: 'It was a victory - a proof that we were still alive - though we knew our lives hung by a thread, a whim.' Restrained and compassionate, based on real events, The Wedding in Auschwitz is a stark reminder of how, in the middle of the twentieth century, history determined the lives of individuals.

The story of their brief but enduring love both for each other and for social justice is narrated through the memory of their daughter Rosa María in 'Love at First Sight: A Recollection'. In his touching portrait of the fate of these non-fictional individuals, Erich Hackl illuminates an alternate perspective on Austria's position in the frenzied social and political configurations that mark Europe from the 1920s to the 1990s. In "History of a Promise," the mind of the septuagenarian protagonist Willi retraces a path from his poverty in the Vienna of the First Republic through his internment in the concentration camps to his entrepreneurial success in his chosen South American exile as he reveals for the first time a promise that he had made.
