Keine andere Epoche ist so reich an Marchenstoffen und -motiven wie das Mittelalter, und in keiner anderen Epoche hat das Marchen einen so tiefgreifenden Einfluss auf die Schriftkultur gehabt wie im franzosischen Mittelalter. Von der Marchenstruktur der Artusromane uber Marchenelemente der epischen Chanson de geste bis zu der Literatur der sog. kleinen Formen wie Lai und Exempel ist die Bedeutung einer Gattung spurbar, die gleichwohl als solche nicht existiert und erst in Renaissance und Barock wieder entdeckt werden wird. Bis dahin konnte man wie auf einem uberschriebenen Palimpsest von Marchenspuren sprechen, die durch die manifeste Textstruktur okkultiert werden. Offensichtlich ist die autonome mythische Stimme mit mittelalterlicher Geistigkeit nicht vereinbar, doch zugleich faszinierend genug, um in der hofisch-klerikalen Schriftkultur neu instrumentalisiert zu werden. Die vorliegenden Kapitel, zum Teil bereits publiziert und zum Teil neu verfasst, schliessen sich unter diesem Aspekt der entfremdeten mythischen Stimme zu einem Panorama der Refunktionalisierung von Marchenstoffen in den Grossgattungen Roman und Chanson de geste zusammen. Im Gegensatz zu dem reichen Marchenmaterial, das wir z. B. in den Predigtexempeln finden, ist die Auswahl auf wenige bekannte Stoffe begrenzt, die hier erstmals in einer gemeinsamen funktionsgeschichtlich ideologischen Perspektive zusammen behandelt werden.

The apparently vague and certainly hackneyed term 'structure' has become a terminally ubiquitous 'hardly perennial' in the research on Arthurian romance in verse and prose. Unlike orally derived epic poetry, early Arthurian romance already evolved an identity as an individually under-written, authorial, consciously fictional, and - in tendency at least - autonomous structure or 'conjointure' in its own right. Thus from the outset Arthurian research revolved around problems of form and in the course of its history attempted (not least under influence of the respectively prevalent research paradigms) to develop and/or draw on narrative models for the purpose of casting light on Arthurian structural regularities. The most famous instance of this is certainly the 'dual path theory', adumbrated by Wilhelm Kellermann, developing into a paradigm in post-mar research and justifying the positing of an 'Arthurian structure' (Hugo Kuhn). Looking back at the end of the 20th century on the various separate stages of Arthurian research, and exactly 50 years after the establishment of the International Arthurian Society, the German Section of the Society felt it incumbent upon itself to essay a stock-taking retrospect and combine a critical review of earlier research findings with an attempt at new approaches taking research on this subject on into the future.

Wie sind Handlungen literarischer Figuren motiviert? Lassen sie sich psychologisch oder narratologisch erklären? Da die Figuren arthurischer Romane textübergreifend konstruiert werden, könnte man annehmen, ihre Handlungen folgten einem festen Muster, unabhängig von situativ dargestellten Emotionen. Gibt es also eine gattungsspezifische Handlungsmotivation? – Um diese Fragen kreisen die hier versammelten Beiträge. Sie demonstrieren, dass der europäische Artusroman keine einheitliche Behandlung von Emotionen als Handlungsmotivation kennt. Groß ist die Variationsbreite der sichtbaren Innerlichkeit der Figuren. Als gattungsspezifisch lässt sich aber eine Tendenz erkennen, das Verhältnis von Emotion und Handlung in den Texten selbst als ein Produkt narrativer Vermittlung aufzudecken: durch die Inszenierung von Selbstverlust oder des Widerstreits zwischen Vernunft und Emotion, durch ein offenes Spiel mit unterschiedlichen Graden der Informiertheit von Figuren, Erzähler und Rezipienten, durch die Integration des Vorwissens der Rezipienten oder durch die Referenz auf und den Verstoß gegen Codierungen von Emotionen, kulturelle und literarische Normen.

These selected proceedings of the XVIIth International Arthurian Congress (21 to 30 July, 1993 at Bonn) are a major contribution to problems connected with the semiotics of sex, gender and gender roles in Arthurian romance and more generally in medieval narrative. With regard to this particular topic, the proceedings provide a first comprehensive discussion, covering virtually the whole range of medieval Arthurian romance from the Chronicles and the 'classical' period onto verse and prose romances in the XIIIth, XIVth, and XVth centuries, including Malory, and examining the most important works of the mainstreams of French, German, and English literatures. The variety of methods - philological, historical and sociological criticism, anthropological, psychoanalytical, semiotic and linguistic approaches - brought to bear on the texts indicate the growing importance of femininity in the narrative framework as well as a growing awareness of femininity as opposed to the chivalric, masculine set of values. In this perspective, Arthurian romance may be said to be due and revolve around the problem of the sexes or more precisely,gender studies help to define genre studies. Moreover, in pointing out - successful or thwarted - tendencies towards a reassessment of femininity, the studies of this volume may contribute to a better understanding of the civilizing process of the medieval world.

The volume assembles papers delivered at the conference of the German section of the International Arthurian Society in 2005, which was devoted to the problem of corporeality in the medieval and late medieval Arthurian romance. The topic has received much attention in recent medieval studies. Here it is dealt with for the first time both from a consistently genre-historical perspective and from a comparative and interdisciplinary one. The spectrum of themes addressed ranges from concrete and metaphorical corporeality, affectivity and emotionality, and symbolic body forms to problems of "corporate" identity.

Focusing on Arthurian literature, the volume considers which interpretation of myth is appropriate to which phenomena. Both content-related and structural definitions of myth are examined, with particular scrutiny of the mythic substrate in Arthurian romances and the various individual approaches to mythical narrative forms. It becomes clear that no definition of myth is possible beyond one pertaining to the individual text."
