Dieses Buch schildert eine Situation der DDR-Lyrik, deren Produktivitat kein Aquivalent in einer anderen zeitgenossischen Literatur kennt. Der 1978 von Adolf Endler ironisch eingefuhrte Terminus -Sachsische Dichterschule- weist auf ein erstaunliches Zentrum lyrischen Schreibens von insgesamt neunzehn Autoren und Autorinnen hin. Inmitten eines verordneten Sprachmilieus (von Roland Barthes die -enkratische Sprache- genannt) errichtet eine Dichtergeneration ab Mitte der sechziger Jahre eine freilich nicht auf Sachsen beschrankte Werkstatt -illegalen- Austausches in der DDR. In dieser findet nicht eine Verschworung, sondern ein grosses Gastmahl statt, bei dem erhabene Diskurse - Holderlin und der Marxismus, Klopstock und Majakowski, Chlebnikow und Brecht, Bobrowski und Enzensberger - verzehrt werden. Den Machthabern erschien dieses materialistische Ereignis als Komplott, im Innern der -Schule- genoss man hingegen die Differenzen. Was man nach Bachtin relativ abstrakt Dialogizitat genannt hat, wird in der -Sachsischen Dichterschule- exzessiv genossen. In wechselseitigen Portrats, Plagiaten, Widmungen und Anspielungen finden sich u.a. Wolf Biermann, Volker Braun, Heinz Czechowski, Adolf Endler, Elke Erb, Sarah Kirsch und Karl Mickel zu diesem Dichterkreis zusammen. Das Buch beschreibt sowohl das dichte Netz korrespondierender Stimmen als auch, in Einzeldarstellungen, die eigenartigen Handschriften von Endler, Sarah Kirsch, Braun und Mickel."

For many artists and intellectuals in East Germany, daily life had an undeniably surreal aspect, from the numbing repetition of Communist Party jargon to the fear and paranoia engendered by the Stasi. Echoes of Surrealism surveys the ways in which a sense of the surreal infused literature and art across the lifespan of the GDR, focusing on individual authors, visual artists, directors, musicians, and other figures who have employed surrealist techniques in their work. It provides a new framework for understanding East German culture, exploring aesthetic practices that offered an alternative to rigid government policies and questioned and confronted the status quo.

This volume is dedicated to the study of artistic and historical documents that recall German left-wing terrorism in the 1970s. It is intended to contribute to a better understanding of this violent epoch in Germany's recent past and the many ways it is remembered. The cultural memory of the RAF past is a useful device to disentangle the complex relationship between terror and the arts. This bond has become a particularly pressing matter in an era of a new, so-called global terrorism when the culture industry is obviously fascinated with terror. Fourteen scholars of visual cultures and contemporary literature offer in-depth investigations into the artistic process of engaging with West Germany's era of political violence in the 1970s. The assessments are framed by two essays from historians: one looks back at the previously ignored anti-Semitic context of 1970s terrorism, the other offers a thought-provoking epilogue on the extension of the so-called Stammheim syndrome to the debate on the treatment of prisoners in Guantánamo Bay. The contributions on cultural memory argue that any future memory of German left-wing terrorism will need to acknowledge the inseparable bond between terror and the artistic response it produces.
