By examining the history of universal history from the late Middle Ages until the early nineteenth century we trace the making of the global. Early modern universal history can be seen as a response to the epistemological crisis provoked by new knowledge and experience. Traditional narratives were no longer sufficient to gain an understanding of events. Inspired by recent developments in theory of history, the volume argues that the relevance of universal history resides in the laboratory of intense, diverse and mainly unsuccessful attempts at thinking history and universals together. They all shared the common aim of integrating all time and space: assemble the world and keep it together.

Tracing the history of the concepts of civility and civilisation, 'Civilizing Emotions' chooses a global perspective and highlights the role of civility and civilisation in the creation of a new and hierarchised global order in the era of high imperialism and its entanglements, focusing on the developments in a number of well-chosen European and Asian countries. Emotions were at the core of the practices linked to the political project of the civilising process. 'Civilizing Emotions' brings out the role of emotions as an object of the civilising process.

I 1527 plyndrer kejserens tropper pavens Rom. I 1539 indforer den franske konge fransk som administrationssprog i sit rige. Og i 1555 gor freden mellem katolikker og lutheranere i Augsburg opsplitningen af kirken til en realitet. Tilsammen markerer de tre begivenheder det endelige sammenbrud for middelalderens politiske orden. De indvarsler en periode, hvor behovet for en sekulAer legitimering af fyrstens magt blev stadigt mere patrAengende, hvor lAengslen efter politisk stabilitet og national identitet blev vigtigere end religiose stridigheder, og hvor fyrstens hof blev omdannet til et administrativt apparat. Udviklingen skete langsomt og tovende. Men dens slutpunkt viste sig at vAere den modernes stat.EuropAeisk litteratur 1500-1800. Staten undersoger de spor, statens fremvAekst satte i europAeisk litteratur, og de nye funktioner, litteraturen fik i statens skygge. Gennem lAesninger af klassiske vAerker som Thomas Mores Utopia, William Shakespeares Julius Caesar og Ludvig Holbergs Den politiske kandestober undersoger den, hvordan litteraturen forholdt sig til en ny virkelighed, hvor fyrstens magt blev et politisk problem og bureaukratisk effektivitet en utopisk drom. LAesningerne viser tillige, hvordan litteraturen blev et refleksionsrum for tidens politiske sporgsmal.EuropAeisk litteratur 1500-1800. Staten er andet bind af i alt fire om forholdet mellem periodens litteratur og fremvAeksten af en moderne politisk horisont. Det forste bind, Verden, udkom i 2013, og de to folgende vil behandle samfundet og individet. Serien afspejler en ny litteraturhistorisk interesse i Europas grundlAeggende politiske sporgsmal.
