Mục đích tối hậu của việc thực hành Phật đạo đó là việc đạt được sự đột phá về nhận thức để bạt nhổ gốc rễ vô minh vốn câu hữu trong tận sâu thẳm nơi tâm thức chúng ta. Chính điều này đòi hỏi phải phác thảo một tiến trình tỉ mỉ. Để đạt được chiến thắng tối hậu, điều cần thiết bên cạnh việc chặt đứt mối liên hệ giữa cảm thọ và ái dục, điều đã được nói đến trong rất nhiều Kinh điển, mà còn là đảo ngược những tiến trình từ vô minh đến tà kiến. Điều này có nghĩa là sự nhận thức của chúng ta phải được chuyển hoá. Sự nhận thức phải được thay đổi, thay vì để sự nhìn nhận các pháp theo con đường có sự tham gia của ái dục hay thái độ vẩn đục, thì chúng ta nhận thức bằng con đường suy yếu ái dục và cuối cùng loại bỏ vô minh. Quá trình tôi luyện này là sự nhận thấy gần gũi, duy trì, lặp lại nhiều lần, và đỉnh điểm là minh sát Vipassanā, tuệ rõ biết tâm tánh, hay “sự nhận thức đặc biệt”. Và nó chính là Tuệ trí, chính Minh kiến này dẫn đến trí tuệ của xuất thế gian đạo, đạt đến quả vị giải thoát tối hậu. Trong số các nguồn tư liệu sơ khai của Đức Phật, nhấn mạnh về sự tu tập nhận thức đúng đắn mà nổi bật nhất chính là trong Tăng Chi Bộ Kinh, bộ Kinh này các Chương được sắp xếp theo số thứ tự tăng dần từ Một cho tới Mười Một. Một số bài Kinh ở các Chương cuối của bộ này đã nêu bật được vai trò của sự chuyển hoá nhận thức để dễ dàng đưa đến Niết bàn. Bắt đầu từ quyển Năm, Đức Phật đã giới thiệu hai nhóm của năm loại nhận thức; Ngài dạy: “khi phát triển và tu tập, chúng có năm quả lớn, lợi ích lớn, dễ dàng đến bất tử, đưa đến cứu cánh bất tử” (Tương Ưng, Chương Năm pháp. 61-62). Trong quyển Bảy, lại một lần nữa, chúng ta bắt gặp hai nhóm của bảy sự nhận thức dễ dàng đưa đến sự bất tử trong Tương Ưng, Chương Bảy pháp. 48-49); tương tự, trong quyển Chín (16), và quyển Mười (56-57). Trong truyền thống Thượng Toạ Bộ, bài kinh nổi tiếng nhất về sự chuyển hoá nhận thức là Kinh Girimānanda (Tương Ưng, 10.60). Trong bài Kinh này, Đức Phật dạy mười sự nhận thức, mà thực chất là mười lĩnh vực quán chiếu. Ngài không chỉ liệt kê chúng như đã làm trong bài kinh ngắn liên hệ trước, mà còn giải thích ngắn gọn tuần tự từng cái bằng con đường thực tập. Bài Kinh do đó cũng được xem là bảng trích yếu súc tích về chủ đề thiền quán. Song, bài Kinh Girimānanda lại được phổ biến một lí do khác nhau chẳng hạn như: Nó cũng dạy như một bài ‘Kinh Phòng Hộ’, (paritta), một bài Kinh của sự che chở, một ý nghĩa chữa lành. Như một bối cảnh để cho bài Kinh ra đời, Đức Phật dạy mười phép nhận thức vì lợi ích cho vị Tăng đang bệnh tên là Girimānanda. Tỳ Kheo này được mô tả là người bệnh trầm trọng, có lẽ sắp mất. Và chúng ta được kể rằng ngay khi bài Kinh được giảng kết thúc, Thầy Girimānanda, sau khi học mười phép nhận thức này, Thầy ấy đã khỏi hẳn bệnh, bình phục khoẻ mạnh. Beginning with the ethical foundation for meditation, the role of the teacher, the classical subjects of meditation, and the appropriateness of these subjects to individual practitioners, the author traces the practice of meditation to the higher reaches of realization. The eight stages of jhana are individually analyzed and explained in terms of their relation to one another and to the ultimate goal of the teaching. The author makes the critical distinction between the mundane jhanas and supermundane jhanas, pointing out that the lower four, while leading to various mental powers and psychic attainments, are not necessary to full enlightenment and may be developed or bypassed as the medita-tor wishes. The author goes on to explain the place of the jhanas among the accomplishments of an arahat and elucidate their usefulness for a dedicated meditator.
