Introduktion til litteraturen uden for Europa er en grundbog, der guider læseren sikkert gennem et utal af nationallitteraturer, sprogområder og forfatterskaber fra Sydamerika over Nordamerika, Rusland og Kina til Australien, Indien, Mellemøsten og Nordafrika.​ Rejs med til verdens fjernere egne, og find ud af, hvorfor myrer er en af den brasilianske litteraturs onder, hvilke historier samer og grønlændere fortæller om deres liv, hvordan afrikanske forfattere definerer sig selv ud fra lokale og koloniale sprog, og om migrantlitteratur er en ny form for verdenslitteratur. Bogen fokuserer på den litteratur, som ikke fylder meget i uddannelser, bogudgivelser og medier, men som trækker tråde tilbage i verdenshistorien og tilbyder alternative perspektiver på vor tids globaliserede verden. Romantikken bliver ofte fremstillet som en apolitisk eller konservativ stromning i europAeisk litteratur, hvor forfattere vendte samfundet ryggen for at fortabe sig i naturen og dyrke det andelige liv. Men det er pa tide at begrave de gamle domme over romantisk litteratur: LAeser man epokens vAerker i lyset af Den Franske Revolutions demokratidebat, vil man se, at de ofte ogsa har en politisk dimension. Romantikkens dyrkelse af geniet medforer en udforskning af forholdet mellem de Danishnede eliter og det jAevne folk, dens besAettelse af kAerlighed rummer idealer om fAellesskabets samliv, og dens ideer om det andelige kredser om frihed.Disse tanker bliver udfoldet i tre af periodens hovedvAerker, nemlig Friedrich Holderlins brevroman Hyperion (1797/1799), William Wordsworths lyriske epos The Prelude (1805) og Victor Hugos historiske roman Notre-Dame de Paris (1832). Gennem ide- og litteraturhistorisk forankrede nAerlAesninger undersoger forfatteren nogle af de vigtigste tendenser i det righoldige og modsAetningsfyldte bidrag, som europAeisk romantik giver til forstaelsen af det moderne demokratis fundamentale og stadig aktuelle ideer og problemer.

Context in Literary and Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary volume that deals with the challenges of studying works of art and literature in their historical context today. The relationship between artworks and context has long been a central concern for aesthetic and cultural disciplines, and the question of context has been asked anew in all eras. The universe is expanding, the world has gone global, and the US has launched a crusade to export the universal right to democracy to every part of the world. Under the circumstances, it is hardly surprising that the concept of universality is making a remarkable comeback in aesthetic and political theory. The meaning of the world, however, seems more contested than ever. Some denounce it as the ideological guise of particular interests, others as the conceptual equivalent of totalitarianism. But a growing number maintain that universality is an indispensable notion for any genuinely critical aesthetics and politics. Confronting Universalites consists of 12 contributors that examine how contemporary works of art in different media and genres influence, shape, or confront the political realm in both theory and practice by way of the universal. The topics of the essays include depictions of German unification, identity politics of aesthetic taste, contemporary uses of van Gogh, globalized photography, the infamous Danish cartoons, iconic architecture, cinematic representations of migration, the speeches of Nicolas Sarkozy and the interventions of contemporary art in the war in Afghanistan. From various theoretical points of departure, they all demonstrate the importance of the universal in the description of political aesthetic practice in a globalising world.
