Throughout his long, hectic and astonishingly varied life, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749�1832) would jot down his passing thoughts on theatre programmes, visiting cards, draft manuscripts and even bills � Goethe was probably the last true �Renaissance Man�. Although employed as a Privy Councillor at the Duke of Weimar�s court, where he helped oversee major mining, road-building and irrigation projects, he also painted, directed plays, carried out research in anatomy, botany and optics � and still found time to produce masterpieces in every literary genre. His fourteen hundred Maxims and Reflections reveal some of his deepest thought on art, ethics, literature and natural science, but also his immediate reactions to books, chance encounters or his administrative work. Although variable in quality, the vast majority have a freshness and immediacy which vividly conjure up Goethe the man. They make an ideal introduction to one of the greatest of European writers.

This is the complete edition of the Italian Journey with some illustrations.The Italian Journey (in the German original: Italienische is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's report on his travels to Italy from 1786-88, published in 1816-17. The book is based on Goethe's diaries. It is smoothed in style, lacking the spontaneity of his diary report, and augmented with the addition of afterthoughts and reminiscences.At the beginning of September 1786, when Goethe had just turned thirty-seven, he "slipped away", in his words, from his duties as Privy Councillor in the Duchy of Weimar, from a long platonic affair with a court lady, and from his immense fame as the author of the novel Werther and the stormy play Götz von Berlichingen, and took what became a licensed leave of absence. By May 1788 he had travelled to Italy via Innsbruck and the Brenner Passand visited Lake Garda, Verona, Vicenza, Venice, Bologna, Rome and Alban Hills, Naples and Sicily. He wrote many letters to a number of friends in Germany, which he later used as the basis for Italian Journey.

Most of The Sorrows of Young Werther is presented as a collection of letters written by Werther, a young artist of a sensitive and passionate temperament, to his friend Wilhelm. These give an intimate account of his stay in the fictional village of Wahlheim (based on Garbenheim, near Wetzlar),[citation needed] whose peasants have enchanted him with their simple ways. There he meets Charlotte, a beautiful young girl who takes care of her siblings after the death of their mother. E se cotesta affermazione del matrimonio inviolabile e indissolubile si accompagnava al proclamato dovere della rinuncia ad ogni altro amore, la regola morale del libro sarebbe stata anche piú stretta. Sembra infatti che nella mente di Goethe regnasse questo spirito, ma contro la sua mente assennata operava il suo cuore romantico. E oggi, per quanto ancora la critica ufficiale punti su la tesi morale del romanzo, è difficile sottrarsi all'impressione che quella tesi sia mal difesa. Invero, nel libro, le conseguenze dell'aver tenuto fermo un vincolo coniugale recente sí, ma già vulnerato e frusto, sono l'annegamento di un innocente bambino e la morte di due innamorati, suicidi, o quasi, per disperazione. Dinanzi a cosí pietosa catastrofe, la tesi morale scompare, e la passione contrastata e oppressa leva alto il suo tragico grido. La tomba dei due amanti diventa il suo monumento. Nel sessantenne Goethe che scrive le Affinità Elettive pur sopravvive, alquanto sliricato, sí, ma non mutato di cuore, l'autore giovanile del Werther. Le leggi morali hanno bensí una loro bellezza ideale, ma a lui, naturalista e romantico, osservatore di fatti naturali e assertore della potenza demonica, infusa in ogni amore, dice molto di piú la chimica, che gli insegna la legge delle affinità molecolari, scoperta trent'anni prima dallo svedese Bergmann: la legge onde avviene l'alterazione di certe sostanze per l'attrazione irresistibile che trascina uno dei loro componenti ad aggregarsi a un vicino corpo estraneo quando si trovi in esso un componente affine. Le creature umane sono pure esseri della natura: Goethe ne derivava pertanto la loro naturale attitudine a disgiungersi per raggiungere quello che altrove irresistibilmente le attrae. Lo seduceva il veder affermata dalla natura, già nelle sue strutture primordiali, questa legge di amore. Essa era bene la legge del destino. Contrastata, ne nasceva la tragedia. La tragedia antica e di tutti i tempi: e in essa alcunché di inesorabile, poiché qualche cosa che è nella natura e nel piú profondo cuore dell'uomo è stata avversata. Dunque, se, nei tardi anni della sua vita, Goethe diceva ad Eckermann essere le Affinità Elettive l'unica opera di maggiori proporzioni in cui egli avesse lavorato a rappresentare una idea essenziale, dobbiamo vedere questa idea nella legge chimica enunciata dal titolo meglio che non nella missione morale dell'errabondo Mittler, personaggio piú vicino alla macchietta che alla solennità. Non monta che, quando scrive le Affinità ed anche in anni piú tardi, Goethe fosse scrupoloso apostolo del vincolo coniugale e avesse appunto allora rinunciato a una delle sue passioncelle per rispettarlo. Proprio nel 1808, quando si decise ad allargare a romanzo un soggetto destinato dapprima a svolgimento piú breve, il poeta aveva sposato da due anni Cristiana Vulpius, che era la sua donna da piú di tre lustri, per gratitudine verso la brava creatura che aveva saputo, tra altro, menomargli i danni e calmargli lo spavento dell'invasione francese. Ma già dopo un anno dalle nozze l'incontro con Minna Herzlieb, la pupilla del libraio Fromman, da lui conosciuta bambina ed ora riveduta sui diciott'anni, bellissima, aveva acceso la fantasia del maturo signore, e la rinuncia a certi sogni che gli erano frullati per il capo ebbe sapore alquanto amaro.
