Pieter Bruegel, l'Ancien (près de Breda, 1525 – Bruxelles, 1569) Pieter Bruegel fut le premier membre important d'une famille d'artistes, actifs durant quatre générations. D'abord dessinateur avant de devenir peintre, il peignit des thèmes religieux, comme la Tour de Babel, avec des couleurs extrêmement vives. Influencé par Jérôme Bosch, il s'attela à de vastes scènes complexes décrivant la vie paysanne et des allégories bibliques ou spirituelles, souvent peuplées de sujets plongés dans des actions très variées. Pourtant, ces scènes ont en commun une intégrité informelle et un certain humour. A travers son oeuvre, il introduisit un nouvel esprit d'humanité. Ami des humanistes, Bruegel composa de véritables paysages philosophiques au coeur desquels l'Homme accepte passivement son destin, prisonnier du temps qui passe.

Hans Holbein le Jeune (Augsburg, 1497 – Londres, 1543) Le génie de Holbein s'épanouit très tôt. Sa ville natale d'Augsburg était alors à son zénith. Située sur le grand axe reliant l'Italie au nord de l'Europe, c'était la ville commerçante la plus riche d'Allemagne, une halte fréquente pour l'empereur Maximilien. Son père, Hans Holbein l'Ancien, était lui-même un peintre de mérite, et le prit dans son atelier. En 1515, à l'âge de dix-huit ans, Holbein s'installa à Bâle, le centre du savoir, dont la fierté reposait sur le fait que chaque maison recelait au moins un érudit. Envoyé à Londres avec une lettre d'introduction pour Sir Thomas More, le chancelier du roi, «Master Haunce », ainsi que l'appelaient les Anglais, arriva à peu près au moment du blocus de 1526. Holbein fut bien accueilli et s'installa, dès sa première visite, en Angleterre. Il peignit des portraits de nombreux hommes influents de l'époque, et réalisa des dessins pour un tableau de la famille de son bienfaiteur. Il devint bientôt le célèbre portraitiste de la Renaissance nordique au service des figures contemporaines. De façon tout à fait typique, son travail incluait d'étonnants détails comme des reflets naturels à travers le verre ou la trame enchevêtrée des élégantes tapisseries. En 1531, Holbein retourna en Angleterre. Mais là aussi, les choses avaient changé. En 1536, remarqué par Henry VIII, Holbein devient le peintre officiel de la cour, position qu'il conservera jusqu'à sa mort.

Die Künstler der Secession kehrten der etablierten Kunst den Rücken, um mit neuen dekorativen Formen und Ideen zu experimentieren und sich für eine sinnträchtige, erotische Ästhetik zu öffnen – ein Weg, der sie auf Kollisionskurs mit dem gutbürgerlichen Empfinden der gehobenen Wiener Gesellschaft brachte. Art Deco style was established on the ashes of a disappeared world, the one from before the First World War, and on the foundation stone of a world yet to become, opened to the most undisclosed promises. Forgetting herself in the whirl of Jazz Age and the euphoria of the “Années Folles”, the Garçonne with her linear shape reflects the architectural style of Art Deco: to the rounded curves succeed the simple and plain androgynous straight line... Architecture, painting, furniture and sculpture, dissected by the author, proclaim the druthers for sharp lines and broken angles. Although ephemeral, this movement keeps on influencing contemporary design.

“No me intereso en mí mismo como tema de una pintura, sino en los demás... en especial en las mujeres...” Hermosas, sensuales y, sobre todo, eróticas, las pinturas de Gustav Klimt hablan de un mundo de opulencia y placer que parece estar a miles de años luz de distancia del rudo entorno posmoderno en el que vivimos ahora. Los temas que trata, alegorías, retratos, paisajes y figuras eróticas, no contienen prácticamente ninguna referencia a eventos externos, sino que tratan de crear un mundo en el que la belleza predomina sobre todo lo demás. El uso que hace del color y los patrones está profundamente influenciado por el arte japonés, el antiguo Egipto y Bizancio. Ravenna, la perspectiva plana y bidimensional de sus pinturas y la calidad con frecuencia estilizada de sus imágenes dan forma a una obra imbuida de una profunda sensualidad y en la que la figura femenina es soberana. Las primeras obras de Klimt le hicieron alcanzar el éxito a una edad muy temprana. Gustav nació en 1862 y consiguió una beca del estado para estudiar en la Kunstgewerbeschule (escuela de artes y oficios de Viena) a la edad de catorce años. Su talento como dibujante y pintor quedó de manifiesto muy pronto y en 1879 formó la Künstlercompagnie (Compañía de artistas) con su hermano Ernst y otro estudiante, Franz Matsch. La segunda mitad del siglo XIX fue un periodo de gran actividad en la arquitectura en Viena. En 1857, el emperador Francisco José había ordenado la destrucción de las fortificaciones que solían rodear el centro de la ciudad medieval. El resultado fue la Ringstrasse, un nuevo y floreciente distrito con magníficos edificios y hermosos parque, todo pagado por el erario público. Por lo tanto, el joven Klimt y sus asociados tuvieron muchas oportunidades de mostrar su talento, y recibieron comisiones para las decoraciones de la celebración de las bodas de plata del emperador Francisco José y la emperatriz Elisabeth. En 1894, Matsch se marchó del estudio comunal y en 1897, Klimt, junto con sus amigos más cercanos, renunciaron a la Künstlerhausgenossenschaft (Sociedad cooperativa de artistas austriacos) para formar un nuevo movimiento llamado la Secesión, del cual fue electo presidente de manera inmediata. Sobre la entrada estaba escrito su lema: “A cada era su arte; al arte, su libertad”. Más o menos a partir de 1897, Klimt pasó casi todos los veranos en Attersee, con la familia Flöge. Fueron periodos de paz y tranquilidad en los que produjo paisajes que constituyeron casi un cuarto de la totalidad de su obra. Klimt realizó bocetos de prácticamente todo lo que hacía. En ocasiones realizaba más de cien dibujos para una pintura, cada uno con un detalle distinto, un traje, una joya o un simple gesto. La calidad excepcional de Gustav Klimt se refleja en el hecho de que no tuvo predecesores ni verdaderos seguidores. Admiró a Rodin y a Whistler sin copiarlos servilmente, y a su vez recibió la admiración de los pintores vieneses más jóvenes, como Egon Schiele y Oskar Kokoschka, cuya obra muestra una gran influencia de Klimt.

A symbol of modernity, the Viennese Secession was defined by the rebellion of twenty artists who were against the conservative Vienna Künstlerhaus' oppressive influence over the city, the epoch, and the whole Austro-Hungarian Empire. Influenced by Art Nouveau, this movement (created in 1897 by Gustav Klimt, Carl Moll, and Josef Hoffmann) was not an anonymous artistic revolution. Defining itself as a “total art”, without any political or commercial constraint, the Viennese Secession represented the ideological turmoil that affected craftsmen, architects, graphic artists, and designers from this period. Turning away from an established art and immersing themselves in organic, voluptuous, and decorative shapes, these artists opened themselves to an evocative, erotic aesthetic that blatantly offended the bourgeoisie of the time. Painting, sculpture, and architecture are addressed by the authors and highlight the diversity and richness of a movement whose motto proclaimed “for each time its art, for each art its liberty” – a declaration to the innovation and originality of this revolutionary art movement.
