The papers presented in this book were originally presented at a conference organized jointly by IFIP working groups 2.2 and 2.3. The titles of the groups are Formal Description of Programming Concepts and Programming Methodology respectively. There is no formal division between these two areas. The papers here which relate to fundamental notions and notations reflect current issues in formal (semantic) description. Programming methods use such description languages but are also concerned with methods of developing implementations which can be shown to satisfy their specifications. Members of both working groups have an interest in mechanical support for the task of proving theorems and the book includes several papers relating to such systems or their underlying logical frameworks.

As a consequence of the wide distribution of software and software infrastructure, information security and safety depend on the quality and excellent understanding of its functioning. Only if this functionality is guaranteed as safe, customer and information are protected against adversarial attacks and malfunction. A vast proportion of information exchange is dominated by computer systems. Due to the fact that technical systems are more or less interfaced with software systems, most information exchange is closely related to software and computer systems. Information safety and security of software systems depend on the quality and excellent understanding of its functioning. The last few years have shown a renewed interest in formally specifying and verifying software and its role in engineering methods. Within the last decade, interactive program verifiers have been applied to control software and other critical applications. Software model checking has made strides into industrial applications and a number of research tools for bug detection have been built using automatic program-verification technology. Such solutions are high-level programming methods which provide strategies to ensure information security in complex software systems by automatically verified correctness. Based on the specific needs in applications of software technology, models and formal methods must serve the needs and the quality of advanced software engineering methods. This book provides an in-depth presentation of state-of-the-art topics on how to meet such challenges covering both theoretical foundations and industrial practice.

Theoretical Foundations of Programming Methodology

Computer Science has made considerable progress in making complex software and hardware systems more reliable. This is a result of practical experience and continuous process improvement on one side and of a better and deeper understanding of the fundamentals of software and system engineering on the other side. Recent encouraging trends are a strong integration of formal techniques with practical industrial development methods and more advanced support tools such as modelling, verification, and model-checking support systems. This active area of research has a relatively short term horizon with respect to transferring technology to industrial applications. This volume is focusing on techniques and the scientific basis for calculation-based development of software and hardware systems as a foundation for advanced methods and tools for software and system engineering. This includes topics of specification, description, methodology, refinement, verification, and implementation. The volume presents new trends and insights reflecting the current state of the art in the scientific foundation of these techniques, since such a foundation is an indispensable prerequisite for advanced development methods.

Calculational System Design

This book, coming with four DVDs, presents epochal works of 16 of the most influential software pioneers. Seminal historical papers, going back as far as to the 1950s, are complemented by new papers especially written by the software pioneers for inclusion in this book and by short biographical notes. The volume is based on a conference where the pioneers met and presented their assessment of the past, new ideas, and visions for the future. The volume editors coherently integrated the historical contributions with current aspects and future perspectives. The four DVDs included are an important supplement to the book providing more than 12 hours of video documentation. Besides a representative overview drawing together the highlights of the presentations, the video recording of each pioneer's talk together with the transparencies used is included. Together, the book and the four DVDs constitute a unique and major contribution to the history of software engineering.
