Die Lüge ist eine der Spielformen der nicht-faktualen Kommunikation, die keinen Anspruch auf Wahrheit erfüllt. Im Rahmen des Graduiertenkollegs Faktuales und Fiktionales Erzählen untersuchen die hier versammelten Beiträge verschiedene Theorien und historische Kontexte, in denen Varianten des Lügens, Täuschens, Fälschens, Betrügens und der Falschaussage bzw. der Falschnachricht (fake news) entscheidend sind: so z.B. die zentrale Rolle der Verstellung in der Renaissance, die literarische Konturierung von Fiktion im Gegensatz zur Lüge, aber auch der spielerische Umgang mit Faktualität und Fiktionalität in Roman und Drama. Die Psychologie diskutiert das Lügen als ein Entwicklungsstadium; die Rechtswissenschaft untersucht sog. "legal fictions". Die ganze Welt erzählt. Sie tut es zu unterschiedlichsten Zwecken und in unterschiedlichsten Medien, in unterschiedlichen Kulturräumen und Zeiten. Wenn man die Funktionen von Erzählungen untersucht, wird schnell klar: Eines der faszinierendsten Probleme, dem man sich aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive im Kontext der Erzählforschung zuwenden kann, betrifft die Differenz zwischen Erzählungen, die einen Wahrheitsanspruch erheben, und solchen, die ihre Fiktionalität zur Schau stellen - aber auch wie in Erzählungen Faktuales und Fiktives sich überschneidet, mischt und gegenseitig spiegelt. Das ist nicht nur auf der Gegenstandsebene des Erzählten ein komplexes Feld, sondern auch auf der Ebene des Erzähltextes. Unterschiedlich sind zudem die Zugangsweisen derjenigen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, die sich mit dem Erzählen befassen: So hat etwa die Literaturwissenschaft Theorien der Fiktionalität entwickelt; die Psychologie wiederum interessiert sich für Identitäts- und Selbst-Konstruktionen anhand von Erzählungen; die Geschichtswissenschaft und die Ethik ringen immer wieder um Fragen nach Wahrheit und Fiktion. Studien zum Film und anderen Medien der Gegenwart sind mit einem Zeitgeist konfrontiert, der die Unterscheidung zwischen Fiktionalität und Faktualität strategisch und weitreichend aushebelt. Solchen Interferenzen, Kongruenzen und Differenzen von faktualen und fiktionalen Erzählungen wendet sich das von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft finanzierte Graduiertenkolleg 1767 mit dem Titel "Faktuales und fiktionales Erzählen" seit 2012 zu. Der vorliegende erste Band der Buchreihe des Graduiertenkollegs bietet einen Überblick über verschiedene interdisziplinäre Herangehensweisen zum Thema Faktualität und Fiktionalität, die sich innerhalb eines Spektrums von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften, Theologie und Arabistik, Philosophie, Psychologie, Geschichtswissenschaft sowie der Unternehmensberatung verorten lassen.

Faktuales und fiktionales Erzählen

Monika Fludernik presents a detailed analysis of free indirect discourse as it relates to narrative theory, and the crucial problematic of how speech and thought are represented in fiction. Building on the insights of Ann Banfield's Unspeakable Sentences, Fludernik radically extends Banfield's model to accommodate evidence from conversational narrative, non-fictional prose and literary works from Chaucer to the present. Fludernik's model subsumes earlier insights into the forms and functions of quotation and aligns them with discourse strategies observable in the oral language. Drawing on a vast range of literature, she provides an invaluable resource for researchers in the field and introduces English readers to extensive work on the subject in German as well as comparing the free indirect discourse features of German, French and English. This study effectively repositions the whole area between literature and linguistics, opening up a new set of questions in narrative theory.

The Fictions of Language and the Languages of Fiction

This study is the first monograph on the contemporary British novelist and playwright Gabriel Josipovici (1940- ), author of fourteen novels and several dozens of short stories, some thirty plays for radio and the stage, and of a considerable oeuvre in literary criticism. Gabriel Josipovici, also known as a reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement, is now one of the foremost British writers who continue the tradition of Modernism. Josipovici also figures among the most prominent Jewish authors writing in the UK today. This study includes an interview with the author and presents an overview of Josipovici's creative oeuvre. Close readings of a selection of short stories, novels, plays and radio plays are followed by an attempt to place Josipovici on the map of present-day British literature.

Defining (in)sanity

In postcolonial theory we have now reached a new stage in the succession of key concepts. After the celebrations of hybridity in the work of Homi Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak, it is now the concept of diaspora that has sparked animated debates among postcolonial critics. This collection intervenes in the current discussion about the 'new' diaspora by placing the rise of diaspora within the politics of multiculturalism and its supercession by a politics of difference and cultural-rights theory. The essays present recent developments in Jewish negotiations of diasporic tradition and experience, discussing the reinterpretation of concepts of the 'old' diaspora in late twentieth- century British and American Jewish literature. The second part of the volume comprises theoretical and critical essays on the South Asian diaspora and on multicultural settings between Australia, Africa, the Caribbean and North America. The South Asian and Caribbean diasporas are compared to the Jewish prototype and contrasted with the Turkish diaspora in Germany. All essays deal with literary reflections on, and thematisations of, the diasporic predicament.

In this volume, an international group of contributors presents new perspectives on narrative. Using David Herman’s 1999 definition of "postclassical narratology" from Narratologies: New Perspectives on Narrative Analysis (OSUP) as their launching point, these eleven essayists explore the various ways in which new approaches overlap and interrelate to form new ways of understanding narrative texts. Postclassical narratology has reached a new phase of consolidation but also continued diversification. This collection therefore discriminates between what one could call a critical but frame-abiding and a more radical frame-transcending or frame-shattering handling of the structuralist paradigm. Postclassical Narratology: Approaches and Analyses discusses a large variety of different aspects of narrative, such as extensions of classical narratology, new generic applications (autobiography, oral narratives, poetry, painting, and film), the history of narratology, the issue of fictionality, the role of cognition, and questions of authorship and authority, as well as thematic matters related to ethics, gender, and queering. Additionally, it uses a wide spectrum of critical approaches, including feminism, psychoanalysis, media studies, the rhetorical theory of narrative, unnatural narratology, and cognitive studies. In this manner the essays manage to produce new insights into many key issues in narratology. The contributors also demonstrate that narratologists nowadays see the object of their research as more variegated than was the case twenty years ago: they resort to a number of different methods in combination when approaching a problem, and they tend to ground their analyses in a rich contextual framework.

Metaphors of Confinement: The Prison in Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy offers a historical survey of imaginings of the prison as expressed in carceral metaphors in a range of texts about imprisonment from Antiquity to the present as well as non-penal situations described as confining or restrictive. These imaginings coalesce into a 'carceral imaginary' that determines the way we think about prisons, just as social debates about punishment and criminals feed into the way carceral imaginary develops over time. Examining not only English-language prose fiction but also poetry and drama from the Middle Ages to postcolonial, particularly African, literature, the book juxtaposes literary and non-literary contexts and contrasts fictional and nonfictional representations of (im)prison(ment) and discussions about the prison as institution and experiential reality. It comments on present-day trends of punitivity and foregrounds the ethical dimensions of penal punishment. The main argument concerns the continuity of carceral metaphors through the centuries despite historical developments that included major shifts in policy (such as the invention of the penitentiary). The study looks at selected carceral metaphors, often from two complementary perspectives, such as the home as prison or the prison as home, or the factory as prison and the prison as factory. The case studies present particularly relevant genres and texts that employ these metaphors, often from a historical perspective that analyses development through different periods.

The study of narrative—the object of the rapidly growing discipline of narratology—has been traditionally concerned with the fictional narratives of literature, such as novels or short stories. But narrative is a transdisciplinary and transmedial concept whose manifestations encompass both the fictional and the factual. In this volume, which provides a companion piece to Tobias Klauk and Tilmann Köppe’s Fiktionalität: Ein interdisziplinäres Handbuch, the use of narrative to convey true and reliable information is systematically explored across media, cultures and disciplines, as well as in its narratological, stylistic, philosophical, and rhetorical dimensions. At a time when the notion of truth has come under attack, it is imperative to reaffirm the commitment to facts of certain types of narrative, and to examine critically the foundations of this commitment. But because it takes a background for a figure to emerge clearly, this book will also explore nonfactual types of narratives, thereby providing insights into the nature of narrative fiction that could not be reached from the narrowly literary perspective of early narratology.

Die "Bausteine einer Ethik des Strafens" fussen auf der Annahme, dass die Strafe ein notwendiges und gerechtfertigtes Mittel der Reaktion auf Rechtsverletzungen ist. Die Ethik des Strafens will nicht Abstand nehmen von den zugehorigen Themen der Philosophie und Rechtsphilosophie - Rechtfertigung der Strafe, Strafgerechtigkeit, das heisst: Strafzumessung und Tatproportionalitat -, sondern sie berucksichtigt den Unterschied zwischen den Rechtfertigungstheorien und den Vollzugstheorien der Strafe derart, dass die Begrundungstheorien der Strafe in die allgemeine Ethik uberfuhrt werden konnen. Weil das Dass der Strafe nicht gleichbedeutend mit dem Wie der Strafe ist, fragt sie unter Anleitung der Prinzipien der Gerechtigkeit und Verantwortlichkeit nach den konkreten Moglichkeiten, Menschen ihre Taten im Falle des Rechtsbruches zuzuschreiben und ihnen die personliche Ubernahme der Verantwortung, die ihnen aus ihren Taten erwachst, im doppelten Sinne des Wortes zuzumuten, das heisst: ihnen individuelle Verantwortung abverlangen und zutrauen. In diesem Sinne beschaftigt sich Teil I (Systematische Aspekte) mit dem Zusammenhang von rechtfertigungs- und vollzugstheoretischen Fragen der Strafe und macht in je verschiedener Weise philosophische und rechtswissenschaftliche Kontexte einer Ethik des Strafens auf. Teil II (Aktuelle Folterdebatte) bringt in dem im Titel festgeschriebenen Bewusstsein, dass die Ethik des Strafens ein junges Forschungsfeld ist, am konkreten und bewusst zeitgenossischen Beispiel erste Annaherungen an eine ethische Vollzugstheorie der Strafe, wahrend Teil III (Literarische Perspektiven) und Teil IV (Grenzen des Strafens) danach fragen, wie literarische Texte beziehungsweise offentliche Debatten unsere Vorstellungen eines gerechten Strafvollzuges beeinflussen.
