Nell'agosto 2014 la tranquilla esistenza di Nadia Murad, ventunenne yazida del Sinjar, nell'Iraq settentrionale, viene improvvisamente sconvolta: con la ferocia che li contraddistingue, i militanti dello Stato Islamico irrompono nel suo villaggio, incendiano le case, radunano i maschi adulti uccidendone 600 a colpi di kalashnikov e rapiscono le donne, caricandole su autobus dai vetri oscurati. La vie de Nadia Murad a basculé le 15 octobre 2014, lorsque les djihadistes de Daech sont entrés dans le petit village de Kocho, en Irak. Ce jour-là, après avoir rassemblé tous les habitants de cette communauté yézidie dans l’école, les terroristes les ont méthodiquement tués ou kidnappés. L’horreur avait été programmée : les hommes qui refusaient de se convertir à l’islam devaient rejoindre dans les fosses les femmes jugées trop vieilles pour servir. Et parmi elles, la mère de Nadia Murad. La jeune Yézidie est emmenée à Mossoul avec des milliers d’autres jeunes fi lles pour y être vendue. Servante, esclave sexuelle, elle devient la prisonnière de combattants de l’État islamique, jusqu’à sa fuite miraculeuse, grâce à l’aide d’une famille irakienne sunnite. Nadia Murad, meurtrie par la disparition de tant des siens et par ce qu’elle a subi, vit aujourd’hui en Allemagne. Malgré les humiliations, elle a décidé de prendre la plume pour tout raconter. Pas pour elle, puisqu’il est déjà trop tard, mais pour tous les Yézidis et pour toutes les autres femmes victimes de violences. Aujourd’hui, Nadia Murad n’a qu’un seul souhait : « Être la dernière fille au monde à avoir à raconter une histoire pareille. » Ce livre est son histoire.

Nadia Murad was born and raised in Kocho, a small village of farmers and shepherds in northern Iraq. A member of the Yazidi community, she and her brothers and sisters lived a quiet life. Nadia had dreams of becoming a history teacher or opening her own beauty salon. On August 15th, 2014, when Nadia was just twenty-one years old, this life ended. Islamic State militants massacred the people of her village, executing men who refused to convert to Islam and women too old to become sex slaves. Six of Nadia’s brothers were killed, and her mother soon after, their bodies swept into mass graves. Nadia was taken to Mosul and forced, along with thousands of other Yazidi girls, into the ISIS slave trade. Nadia would be held captive by several militants and repeatedly raped and beaten. Finally, she managed a narrow escape through the streets of Mosul, finding shelter in the home of a Sunni Muslim family whose eldest son risked his life to smuggle her to safety. Today, Nadia's story—as a witness to the Islamic State's brutality, a survivor of rape, a refugee, a Yazidi—has forced the world to pay attention to an ongoing genocide. It is a call to action, a testament to the human will to survive, and a love letter to a lost country, a fragile community, and a family torn apart by war.
