Classic portraits, New York scenes and more from the brilliant and indefatigable American photographer American photographer Ruth Orkin earned acclaim for her work as she combined her love for travel and her experience growing up in Hollywood into a practice that captured the cinematic elements of everyday life and revealed the humanity of the upper crust. The atmospheric photographs taken by Orkin in cities such as Florence, New York and London still shape the image of these metropolises today: her street scenes consistently offer penetrating insights into the personality of her human subjects as well as their environments. This unique quality also manifests in her celebrity portraits of figures such as Albert Einstein, Marlon Brando, Tennessee Williams and Lauren Bacall: though clearly posed, these photographs offer a certain level of candor that allows the viewer to connect with the sitters on a human level. She also pursued filmmaking with two successful features, Little Fugitive (1953) and Lovers and Lollipops (1955)--and she did all of this as one of the few female practitioners in the field. Published on the occasion of what would have been the photographer's 100th birthday, this illustrated volume celebrates Orkin's life and career with an equally extensive and fascinating overview of this exceptional artist's oeuvre. Ruth Orkin (1921-85) studied at Los Angeles City College. Working as a freelance photographer, she published in magazines such as Life, Look and Ladies' Home Journal. She was awarded an Oscar for the film Little Fugitive, which she made with her husband in 1953. A World Through My Window (1978) is her best-known book of photographs.

A photo-tour through six cities on the Arabian Peninsula Photographer Michele Nastasi (born 1980) pictures the boomtowns of the Arabian Peninsula, including Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait City, Manama and Riyadh. Set against rapid urban development, avant-garde architecture and desert landscapes, the cities are also connected by tourism and a transient workforce.

Ever since Annette Hauschild (b. in Giessen) moved to Berlin to study at the Lette-Verein, the capital has often been a theme for her photojournalism and for her personal projects. Berlin Stories #4 compiles three black-and-white series produced in Berlin. Both Golden West, photographed in the area around the Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten, and M29, named after the bus line that goes across the city, deal with the changes in society that occurred after the fall of the Iron Curtain, as well as with old and new West Berlin. They are about yearning and reality and are supplemented with brief texts. Finally, Last Days of Disco lures us into a bar in Wedding, an area of West Berlin where time seems to stand still. Annette Hauschild has been a member of the renowned Ostkreuz Photography Agency since 1996.

Christopher Anderson (*1970, Kelowna, Canada), a member of Magnum Photos, is one of the most infl uential contemporary photographers. He fi rst gained recognition in 1999 when he boarded a small boat with 44 Haitian immigrants trying to sail to the United States. The boat sank in the Caribbean. For these images, he received the Robert Capa Gold Medal. Since then, Anderson's work has defi ed categorization as he slips between the worlds of documentary, art, commercial and fashion photography. He was New York Magazine's fi rst ever "Photographer in Residence" and won the World Press Photo contest in 2007 and 2008. The images in Bleu Blanc Rouge, taken in the United States, France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, include portraits, candid moments, and still lifes. Recurring visual elements as the color red, forms and patterns, or a certain light tie the images together to a playful and poetic series. Presented in a magazine-like style, the particular intimacy of Anderson's images enchants the viewer in an instant.

The photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin have been inseparable from the fashion and art scene since the 1990s. Very early on they made use of digital processing and distortion. Sometimes a delicate retouch was enough, and sometimes they took it to the apex of gross contortion. Through their strongly expressive manipulations, the couple developed a pictorial vocabulary of their own, and they continued to develop it in their themes. Their work is extravagant and gaudy. At the same time, however, they deal with cryptic questions about superficiality, gender, and identity. This book of photos presents a kind of retrospective "director's cut," as it were. On the occasion of their exhibition at The Ravestijn Gallery, the artists have selected their favorites from a rich collection. Despite the variety of themes, each photograph bears the inimitable signature of its creators. He piled cans into sculptural towers, stitched together haute-couture clothes, crafted monsters and traps and invented crazy alternatives to toilet paper. He also posted all of his actions on Instagram and invited followers around the world to copy his various mottos. This handy survival guide casts a fun, humorous light on the business of getting by while home alone--from "invent a new meal" to "make a painting using a toothbrush" and "balance all your beauty products." The best pictures from the series, which now numbers more than 1,000 images, are collected here, offering an effective and fun way to combat boredom indoors.

Dubai was rapidly transformed by the discovery of oil in the 1950s. The construction of the world's tallest buildings in the desert metropolis was followed by scores of amusement parks, two hundred artificial islands, tourism, and consumption. Photographer Tor Seidel, resisting the outward allure of the city, instead points his lens towards the yawning gaps and emptiness of Dubai, demonstrating the melancholy and uncanny of the city. Seidel does not reveal whether his photos are digitally altered or not, thus presenting to us the blurred line between reality and illusion that is Dubai.

The photo book Like Birds by photographer Sven Jacobsen takes us back to a carefree time of youthful self-awareness, to a summer full of adventure. In their immediacy, a timeless dimension develops in his photographs of youngsters experimenting; exuberantly jumping into the water; clambering around on fences, poles, and dunes; being silly; kissing; skateboarding; or simply lying in the tall grass. In this way, the lakes, dunes, or apartments depicted become places in a collective memory. The spherical landscapes captured in this way-the snapshots of free youth with its beauty, its chaos, its silence, and its loudness-quickly develop a narrative pull. What looks like a light-hearted summer snapshot on the surface may suddenly touch deeper layers of the subconscious. What happens in amusement parks when the lights go out? What happens at children's playgrounds at night? A desolate quiet takes over the spaces where, when the sun shines, children play and adults relax. With his latest photo series, Night Games, Stefano Cerio (*1962) does more than simply continue his 2015 series Chinese Fun. He links them both through a process used in 2011 while photographing his series Night Ski. With the absence of natural light during nighttime, he made a virtue out of necessity by employing artificial lighting. By doing so, he could achieve sculptural, even haptic qualities in his images. The results are uncanny, fascinating views of carnival rides, slides, and carousels that one usually never sees, although here, they are always close at hand.Exhibition: Galleria del Cembalo, Rome 4.5.-8.7.2017

Revelatory images of Siberia's rapidly transforming landscapes in the permafrost summer Siberia might not be the first place most people think of when they begin planning their summer vacation. But German photographer Olaf Otto Becker (born 1959) is no stranger to the permafrost zone: since the 1990s, he has documented remote areas such as Iceland and Greenland and gained recognition for his photographs of icebergs, capturing their increasingly ephemeral beauty in the face of climate change. In his most recent adventure, Becker trains his eye on Siberia's varied landscapes as he follows a group of researchers taking soil samples during the Russian province's unusually warm summer of 2019. Collected in this clothbound volume are a selection of Becker's most compelling images: children play in the declining harbor town of Tiksi, while inhospitably craggy cliffs loom over wet beaches like enormous abstract sculptures. Siberia's unique splendor is a sight to behold for as long as we have the opportunity to behold it.
