Showcases the art of twentieth-century French sculptor and painter Niki de Saint Phalle, and includes the words of the artist, as well as essays on her life and work.

The unique and spectacular oeuvre of Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) comprises such well-known works as her Shooting Paintings, Nanas, and the Tarot Garden in Tuscany. The Grotto in Hanover, which was redesigned and redecorated according to her plans, is the last large-scale project completed during her lifetime. This imposing artistic legacy is situated in the Baroque section of the Herrenhausen Gardens, one of Germany's most beautiful park landscapes. Originally composed of shells, crystals, glass, and minerals, the Grotto's interior decor was destroyed during the 18th century. Transformed by Niki de Saint Phalle, the site has once again become a place of enchantment. The artist decorated the octagonal central space and the two rooms flanking it on the right and left with magnificent mosaics made of colored glass, mirrors, pebbles, and a host of painted and sculpted figures. This splendidly illustrated volume invites readers to stroll through the Grotto and provides a wealth of information on the history, the furnishings and decorations, and the symbolism of this last major work of art realized by Niki de Saint Phalle. Innovative and pioneering, French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) created an extensive and complex body of work over her five decade-long career. Her work received international recognition as early as 1961 when it was included in the important exhibition 'The Art and Assemblage' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Since then Saint Phalle has been the subject of numerous exhibitions worldwide. Her bright and joyful Nana sculptures have become known as her signature artwork. The artist and her oeuvre however, can not be solely understood through this one body of work. This catalogue, accompanying the artist's first comprehensive retrospective in Belgium at Beaux-Arts Mons (BAM), explores Saint Phalle's multi-faceted practice, examining how the artist worked across a wide-range of media-painting, assemblage, sculpture, performance, public sculpture and architectural projects, film and theatre. Providing an overview of Saint Phalle's entire career, it seeks to demonstrate how the artist used her boundless imagination and unique vision of the world to transcend the space typically reserved for women to become one of the twentieth century's most important artists. Influenced by Gaudi's Parc Guell in Barcelona, and the mannerist park of Bomarzo, Niki de Saint Phalle decided that she wanted to make something similar; a monumental sculpture park created by a woman. In 1974, she was donated some land in Garavicchio, Tuscany, about 100 km north-west of Rome along the coast. The garden, on which planning started in 1978, contains sculptures of the symbols found on Tarot cards. It opened in 1998, after more than 20 years of work. The garden was still incomplete when Niki de Saint Phalle died. With elaborate illustrations and sensitively written texts this book presents in detail the formation of the garden and the underlying ideas.

The Tarot Garden, situated in Italy, is a sculpture park, planned and created by Niki de Saint Phalle. It is her very personal vision of the personalities of the tarot-game: the world, the fool, the hermit, death, the wheel of fortune.
