Part 1 of this block studies Kinematics - the study of motion without regard to how the motion is created. You will learn to use a full vocabulary of motion through studying models of linear, circular and oscillatory motion. In part 2 of this block you will apply the analysis of motion to solve engineering problems, through a wide variety of examples drawn from the real world and will examine the forces that oppose motion.

This book looks at two topics in environmental science:Air - considers the influence of the atmosphere on conditions at the Earth's surface. The components of air, how they interact with one another and with the Earth are all considered. The properties and phenomena that make up our everyday notions of the 'weather' and 'climate' are introduced through observing and measuring elements of the weather. The final section explains the major components of the global circulation of the atmosphere and oceans and how they are related.Earth - looks at rocks and soils. This topic starts by investigating how rocks are formed with different compositions, in a variety of environments. This is followed by a study of weathering and the transformation of weathered rock into soil. It concludes with a look at the relationship between soils and ecosystems, and how they influence the environment. Throughout the book there are questions and activities for the reader to engage with. Answers and explanations are provided at the end of each section.

Environmental Science - Air and Earth

Probability models are developed for situations in which events can occur at any time. Examples include queues, the spread of epidemics, and the change in the size of a population due to births and deaths.The book contains both activities, which are included at various points in the text and exercises, which are placed at the end of some sections. Thinking Critically

This book starts by tackling the question of how neurons conduct signals by focusing on the properties of the neuronal membrane and the generation of nerve impulses or action potentials. It also describes how information is transmitted via synapses and how a variety of neurotransmitters facilitate this transmission. It goes on to deal with perception and control of movement. It provides an overview of the processing of signals by the eyes and the brain that allow us to recognize individuals, with a focus on face-recognition.It also investigates the movement of skeletal muscle by examining the relationship between joints, skeletal muscle and their sensory and motor innervation. It explores movement that is willed (i.e. voluntary) and as such, may occur in the absence of an external stimulus. The contribution of different parts of the brain in mediating willed movement is explored in some detail.
