Around the middle of the 19th century, so called 'antler furniture' was often found in Alpine hunting lodges. These 'trophies' made from hunted animals are seen today as an aberration of rustic conviviality. In modern settings animal materials have also been used ranging from classics of modern interior design from the 1920s that use animal fur as upholstery to ironic antler furniture pastiches from the 1980s, and the application of animal materials for furniture-like objects in contemporary art and design. 'The field of zoology has long supplied the arts and crafts sector with a plethora of sundry materials. The numerous antlers and horns are to be mentioned primarily in this context, which do not merely fill all of the hunting lodges and other houses belonging to keen huntsman but are also to be encountered in the homes of people who have never held a rifle, and at best know how to carve a haunch of venison with the necessary respect.' Burden has a love-hate relationship with the machine: Suspended from the ceiling of the gallery or presented in glorious isolation, the toy-like machine becomes an object of fear and worship, however ironically, a mysterious idol to be propitiated and venerated, even if it no longer works. Thus art makes the machine benign by turning into a strange toy. It masters the machine in a playful, Machiavellian act of homage to it. Burden implicitly sets the cunning of the artist against the engineer who masterminded the machine, implying that the artist can magically undo the human damage the latter unwittingly did with his machine.

Along with Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, Peche determined the character of the Wiener Werkstatte with his designs. Hoffmann, who first hired Peche as his assistant but was later strongly influenced by him, wrote after Peche's death in 1923: "Dagobert Peche was Austria's greatest genius in ornamentation since the days of the Baroque...All of Germany has experienced a new stylistic epoch thanks to Peche's designs."
