Furniture as trophy
Around the middle of the 19th century, so called 'antler furniture' was often found in Alpine hunting lodges. These 'trophies' made from hunted animals are seen today as an aberration of rustic conviviality. In modern settings animal materials have also been used ranging from classics of modern interior design from the 1920s that use animal fur as upholstery to ironic antler furniture pastiches from the 1980s, and the application of animal materials for furniture-like objects in contemporary art and design. 'The field of zoology has long supplied the arts and crafts sector with a plethora of sundry materials. The numerous antlers and horns are to be mentioned primarily in this context, which do not merely fill all of the hunting lodges and other houses belonging to keen huntsman but are also to be encountered in the homes of people who have never held a rifle, and at best know how to carve a haunch of venison with the necessary respect.'
